Chicago Blackhawks GM “motivated” to make big move this offseason

NHL: Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars

The Chicago Blackhawks have been looking to get out of the basement in the NHL for a few years now. They have a lot of young talent maturing, and this is going to be a pivotal offseason. Chicago has a lot of decisions it can be part of. They hold a projected $40.1 million in cap space and four picks in the first two rounds of the draft. Their general manager is ready to pull the trigger and improve the team, but let’s take a closer look at what he said ahead of players switching teams.

Kyle Davidson says the Chicago Blackhawks are motivated to make a major move this offseason

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson spoke to the media and explained that he is motivated to make a splash this offseason.

“I’m certainly motivated to. I don’t know if I feel like its, like, a mandatory thing ,but I want to, yeah. That’s kind of been a lot of the motivation, and a lot of the work here is trying to figure out what’s there that we potentially could add to the group. I wouldn’t say we weren’t motivated in the past to add, but there’s certainly an extra bit of willingness or aggressiveness in trying to explore what’s out there, for sure.”

Players like Jason Robertson, Matthew Knies, and Dylan Larkin are all likely to be on different teams next season. Davidson said it was more internal for the team to decide to make a move now.

“I think it’s just the maturation of our team. We have a better idea of where guys are starting to fall, what things are looking like moving forward, where we need need to fill some holes, which was sort of where we wanted to understand where some of these players were after this year. And so, it’s just a better understanding of what we’re actually trying to fill.

“Now, last couple of years, it’s not like there’s been some windfall of players that we’ve just sat out on. But there’s just, as we get further into this thing, and these players are in the NHL, and we understand their capabilities, their areas of growth and their strengths, what do we need to augment that, and what do you need to support that? And so that’s something we have more information on at this point, which allows us to be much more specific and targeted in what we might want or don’t want.”

The Blackhawks have a 107-187-34 record since Davidson was named general manager in 2022. It will be intriguing to see if Davidson can make a splash this offseason. Remember, it takes two sides to make a significant move happen.
