Chicago Cubs add former rival relief pitcher in surprising trade with Mariners
The Chicago Cubs finally won a series, for the first time in a month. Unfortunately, they lost on Sunday, unable to complete the sweep of the lowly San Francisco Giants, and fell to 37-35 on the season. Fortunately for Chicago, they welcome another lowly team, the Colorado Rockies, to Wrigley Field for their next series. Hopefully, they can start stringing together some wins.
It will truly be interesting, though, to see how Chicago’s pitching continues to perform amid the injuries issues it has had to deal with all year long. With so many unknowns regarding who will be available, the Cubs have started to add outside help.
The Chicago Cubs trade for Yosver Zulueta from the Seattle Mariners
Earlier today, the Cubs announced that they have received right-handed reliever Yosver Zulueta from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash:

In a corresponding move, left-handed reliever Doug Nikhazy was designated for assginment. Zulueta was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
A former Cincinnati Reds farmhand, Zulueta has not had much success on the Major League level. In 19 career games, he is 1-0 with a 5.32 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. He does have nasty stuff, though, as he has 25 strikeouts in 23.2 career innings.
As mentioned, Zulueta is coming from the Mariners, who also had him with their Triple-A squad. In 22 games this season, he is 2-3 with a 5.75 ERA. Last season, though, on the Reds’ Triple-A team, he was 2-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 44 appearances.
It is yet to be seen if Zulueta will have a role on the Cubs’ roster this year, or if he was acquired for organizational depth as other pitchers are called up to fill injury voids. He, at least, as some Major League experience.
