Chicago Cubs predicted to land 2x All-Star starting pitcher ahead of MLB trade deadline
The Chicago Cubs cannot seem to catch a break when it comes to the health of their starting pitching staff. Going into 2026, it was believed that preferred ace Justin Steele would return around mid-season. Now, he is not going to start any games this year, though the Cubs are hopeful that he could make some appearances out of the bullpen late in the year.
Cade Horton is out for the year after an early arm injury, and Edward Cabrera just ended up on the injured list again. Matthew Boyd has been on and off the injured list twice.
If Chicago is going to make up ground in the National League Central Division and make the postseason, they are going to need reinforcements.
The Chicago Cubs are predicted to trade for Freddy Peralta
For many weeks now, the Cubs have been named as one of the teams who could trade for New York Mets pitcher Freddy Peralta. The former Milwaukee Brewers ace was traded to New York during the off-season and is the final season of club control.
Bleacher Report recently predicted, once again, that Chicago will be the team to land the two-time All-Star:
“The Cubs ranked dead-last in rWAR from starting pitchers, so they need to aim high as they can if they want to sustain their playoff push. And while earlier buzz about them being in on Peralta fizzled, it is a good fit.
“The righty’s value is somewhat suppressed, which is useful for the Cubs after so many years of promotions and trades have thinned out their farm. But even if the Mets ask for No. 1 prospect Pedro Ramírez, the Cubs might have to consider it.”
The positive thing about potentially adding Peralta is that he is durable. He started 30+ games in each of the past three seasons and has made 16 thus far. He is also playing on a very affordable contract.
However, he is just 5-6 with a 4.83 ERA this year, his worst since 2019, which was his first full season in the Majors.
He does, though, have a history of success and perhaps a return to the National League Central could help him turn the year around.
