The Chicago White Sox have been seeing a great first few months of the season. Players have been surpassing their preseason expectations, and that includes one starting pitcher. He is pitching like one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball thus far. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what he has been doing on the mound to get this type of attention.
Davis Martin is a contender for the 2026 AL Cy Young Award
Sports Illustrated’s Tim Capurso wrote an article highlighting the top contenders in the American League Cy Young race. Chicago fans were thrilled to see Davis Martin getting some recognition for his outstanding start to the year, as he highlighted in the article:
“Martin has been one of the pleasant surprises on one of baseball’s most surprising teams in the second-place White Sox. The 29-year-old, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 and dealt with a forearm injury last season, is also an example of a pitching success story in light of health setbacks, a rarity in the age of high velocity.
“Speaking of which, Martin doesn’t throw hard but he doesn’t need to. The Abilene, Tx., native boasts six pitches in his arsenal, three of which are fastballs – a four-seamer, sinker and cutter – that are delivered from the same arm slot and sport similar enough velocities to keep with the deception. Add in a capable curveball and slider and it’s not hard to see why Martin ranks in the 68th percentile or better in chase, whiff and strikeout rates. One of just four pitchers in the AL to rank in the top-10 in both strikeout and groundball rate, Martin in very much in the running for this award.”
Martin has been a star for the White Sox this season, despite not even being the team’s Opening Day starter. In 12 starts, he is 8-2 with a 2.61 ERA and a .236 opposing batting average in 72.1 innings. He also has kept the ball in the park, giving up just three home runs this year. Each season, Martin has shown the ability to improve on the bump and he is continuing that trend in his fourth MLB season.
This is not the first time he is getting some love for his 2026 production. Now as a full-time starting pitcher in the bigs, it is going to be intriguing to see if Davis can continue pitching like a Cy Young Award candidate.
