White Sox reportedly have confusing MLB trade deadline plans

The Chicago White Sox have been one of the best teams in baseball for the last month-and-a-half, having gone 27-15 since bottoming out at 11-17 back on April 26. The White Sox are now in first place in the AL Central, and they have shown no signs of slowing down.

Even a hamstring injury to Munetaka Murakami has not hindered Chicago’s progress. In fact, the White Sox have made up ground in the division since Murakami went down late last month.

So, what does this mean for Chicago’s trade deadline plans?

Everyone expected the White Sox to be sellers this season, but things have obviously changed. Not only is Chicago in playoff contention, but it is now firmly in the driver’s seat in the AL Central, especially after Jose Ramirez’s hamate bone fracture in Cleveland.

The White Sox could end up buying between now and Aug. 3, but just how aggressive will they be? Therein lies the problem for general manager Chris Getz.

Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY recently revealed some nuggets with the deadline in sight, and he dropped some confusing intel on the South Siders.

“They plan to be aggressive at the trade deadline in their search for pitching, but not at the expense of parting with any of their top prospects as they build towards the future,” Nightengale wrote.

Well, just how “aggressive” can you actually be if you are making all of your top prospects off limits?

Chicago’s farm system wasn’t highly-touted entering the season, but things have since changed. Some now view the White Sox’s farm system as one of the better ones in baseball, so it’s not like Getz can’t afford to trade from depth.

Unless Chicago — which owns the best record in the American League since April 17 — doesn’t genuinely believe it can make a run this season, then essentially sitting out the trade deadline because of prospect stashing could prove fatal.

There is no guarantee the White Sox will be in the playoffs year after year, so now that they have a great chance of playing October baseball, they should take advantage of it. That doesn’t mean they should do anything silly, but if they can manage to land some club-controlled talent, they should be willing to part with decent prospect capital.
