White Sox trade proposal nets breakout star to solve growing problem

The Chicago White Sox are somehow contenders this season, which I don’t even think the White Sox themselves anticipated. But that doesn’t mean the team doesn’t have significant problems that must be prepared before the MLB trade deadline.

Chicago needs to fix its starting rotation, and it could also use another bat in a lineup that is very top-heavy. Not only that, but the White Sox could stand to improve a bullpen that ranks 19th in baseball in ERA and 26th in win probability added.

Seranthony Dominguez has been a significant problem in the closer role, so Chicago will need to find a solution between now and Aug. 3 if it wants to make a serious playoff push this year.

Of course, elite closers don’t just grow on trees, and the cost to acquire them is typically steep. The White Sox surely don’t want to break the bank for a relief pitcher this summer, so they may try to explore some more affordable options.

Andrew Apostolakis of Southside Showdown has identified an intriguing trade target in that regard: Colorado Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela.

Senzatela was converted into a full-time reliever this year and has experienced considerable success, pitching to the tune of a 2.23 ERA. And while he’s making decent money this season and in 2027, Apostolakis feels that will diminish the cost in a potential deal.

“He currently owns a 2.23 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He only has three saves because his appearances in the ninth inning have been rare, but he’s still been incredibly effective in the role he’s been given. Senzatela is owed $12 million this season and has a $14 million option for 2027, so he’s a bit on the expensive side, but that should make him fairly cheap to acquire in terms of prospect cost,” Apostolakis wrote.

Senzatela entered the big leagues with the Rockies in 2017 and has actually spent his entire career there, laying claim to a 5.04 ERA and 1.491 WHIP. Keep in mind, though, that those numbers came as a starter. He seems much more comfortable in a bullpen role this season, so perhaps the 31-year-old has found new life.

The White Sox have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, so they can afford to take on Senzatela’s money. The question is whether or not they would actually want to trade anything for a pitcher who had been subpar for the first nine years of his career.

If Chicago wants to make the playoffs, though, it will have to take some risks, and acquiring Senzatela could be one of them.
