2x Reliever of the Year stashed in Cubs minor leagues becomes free agent
Under Craig Counsell, the Chicago Cubs have developed a knack for identifying veteran pitchers on low-cost or minor league deals and helping them revive their careers. Brad Keller, Drew Pomeranz, Caleb Thielbar, Jacob Webb, and Trent Thornton are all recent examples of that strategy paying off.
Until recently, it looked like Liam Hendriks could be the next success story. The two-time Reliever of the Year signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in May and impressed during his brief stint with Triple-A Iowa. Across four appearances, he didn’t allow a run, surrendered just one hit and one walk, and recorded at least one strikeout in every outing.
Despite those encouraging results, Hendriks is back on the free agent market after being released by the Cubs. The move was likely the result of an opt-out clause in his contract rather than a decision by the organization to move on, allowing the veteran reliever to explore other opportunities in search of a major league role.
Will the Chicago Cubs regret not giving an opportunity to Liam Hendricks?

Hendriks has already spent time in both the Cubs and Minnesota Twins organizations during the 2026 season, signing minor league deals with each club. That comes one year after he posted a 6.59 ERA with the Boston Red Sox, his most recent major league action since 2023. Notably, he missed time from 2023-2025 due to a combination of Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Tommy John surgery, and various other physical setbacks.
While re-entering free agency this close to the trade deadline doesn’t guarantee Hendriks an immediate major league opportunity, his market could pick up in the weeks ahead. By mid-to-late August, contending teams may look to add experienced bullpen depth before Sept. 1, ensuring he’s eligible for a potential postseason roster.
That said, if a team destined for October baseball doesn’t show interest in him now, his best course of action may be to re-sign with the Cubs on a minor league deal. Time will tell if that happens or not, but for now the Cubs should not regret not finding a spot for him on their 40-man as that possibility is not fully ruled out.
