Another Chicago Bears CB in trouble early in training camp
Despite a solid season by Kevin Byard III and Jaquan Brisker, the Chicago Bears cleared house at the safety position this offseason, moving on from both in addition to Jonathan Owens and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
The Bears replaced Byard and Brisker with Coby Bryant and rookie Dillon Thieneman.
Chicago could be looking at doing the same with their cornerbacks during the 2027 offseason. Kyler Gordon has been in hot water this offseason, as he battles a soft-tissue injury that kept him sidelined during mandatory minicamp and on the PUP list to start training camp.
Another cornerback needed a strong summer. Tyrique Stevenson is set to play under the final year of his rookie contract. Per Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, Stevenson’s defense led to the offense’s biggest play of the day when Kalif Raymond beat him.
“Williams’ best play was a 55-yard touchdown pass to veteran wide receiver Kalif Raymond up the left side,” Lieser wrote.
“Raymond beat cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, and safety Coby Bryant couldn’t get over in time to help him. As Raymond streak toward the end zone, Williams put the ball perfectly in front of him to catch it in stride and race away.”

Getting beat by Raymond is a bad sign for Stevenson, who needs to have a good season, not only if he wants to stay with the Bears, but to have a chance to be a starter in the league in 2027.
Lieser thinks Stevenson could lose his job to Terrell Smith if things don’t turn around for the 2023 second-round pick.
“Stevenson had a choppy practice overall as he tries to secure a starting job,” he wrote. “The team has him penciled in on the outside opposite Jaylon Johnson, but he faces a tough challenge yet again from Terell Smith.”
We’ve been waiting on Stevenson to show why the Bears traded up to land him for three seasons now. He’s running out of time to do so, and he shouldn’t be getting beat by Raymond.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen claimed this week that the secondary would be the key to fixing the passing rush, making the opposing quarterback pause, which would allow the front seven time to make a sack.
That doesn’t look promising at this point either.
