Another frustrating Kyle Teel injury should force White Sox hand at 2026 trade deadline
The Chicago White Sox had high expectations for Kyle Teel in 2026. After a strong showing across 78 games in 2025, consisting of a .273/.375/.411 slash line, the 24 year old catcher hasn’t been able to stay healthy in 2026, thus impacting his performance.
After initially injuring his hamstring during the World Baseball Classic, Teel sustained a knee sprain while on minor league rehab assignment. This delayed his 2026 debut until June 22, but now, less than a month afterwards, a new injury to his ankle has him likely landing on the injured list, according to Francys Romero anyway.
The Chicago White Sox have recalled C Edgar Quero, per sources.
He’s expected to join the team tomorrow in Texas.

Prior to this ankle injury, which per Teel occurred while diving across the plate to apply a tag early in the game, he was slumping at the plate. Over 19 games, he owns a .190/.271/.317 slash line. Unfortunately his struggles have been a continuation of poor production from the catcher position this year, which should force the White Sox hand at the upcoming trade deadline.
Between Kyle Teel’s new injury, and the Chicago White Sox lack of production at catcher this year, a move at the upcoming trade deadline feels imminent

Including Kyle Teel’s numbers, no White Sox catcher has hit above .200 or posted an OPS higher than .588 this season. The combination of Edgar Quero (55 games), Drew Romo (37 games), and Reese McGuire (11 games) has provided virtually no offensive production, leaving Chicago with one of the least productive catching groups in baseball.
With Teel now sidelined again and the position already struggling offensively, the White Sox would be wise to pursue an upgrade before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Even if Teel’s ankle injury proves to be minor, counting on him to suddenly rediscover the form he showed in 2025 after an injury-plagued season is a risky proposition. For a team trying to maintain its hold atop the AL Central, adding a proven catcher could be a worthwhile investment.
Internally, 23-year-old Boston Smith, acquired in the Curtis Mead trade earlier this season, has enjoyed a breakout campaign. The left-handed slugger has launched 20 home runs across three minor league levels, but with only 12 games of Double-A experience, promoting him to the majors this season would likely be too aggressive. As promising as Smith’s future appears, he doesn’t seem like a realistic solution for Chicago’s 2026 playoff push.
