Sophie Cunningham clears the air on development away from Fever

Sophie Cunningham took some time away from the Indiana Fever on Sunday. The 29-year-old headed to Carmel, Indiana to host her own youth basketball camp. Cunningham catered to young kids in grades 1 through 8 at AlettoFamily Sports Center in a fun-filled day of basketball and more.

For the participants, one of the highlights of the camp is the chance to interact with a bona fide WNBA star. Cunningham made sure to not only teach the kids the fundamentals of the sport, but to also spend time with them off the court.

Cunningham addressed one specific development during the camp. This was after the kids insisted to take a photo while everyone, including Cunningham, was pointing using their index fingers.

Cunningham became a viral sensation (again) after an incident with Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner. As the two engaged in a heated in-game confrontation, Cunningham decided to point at Bonner for an extended period. This made the Mercury veteran even angrier, especially after Cunningham refused to stop pointing.

The kids at Cunningham’s camp knew all about the meme. In fact, they made sure to take a photo with Cunningham as she busted out the infamous pose. The Fever star addressed the development as she spoke to the press.

“Okay, I will say they’re the ones requesting it,” she said. “They’re like, ‘Hey, can you point?’ I’m like, ‘Whatever you guys want.’

“I walked in, and instead of cheers and stuff, everyone pointed. I don’t know if they set that up or what, but it’s been really fun to come in there. Now they’re all starting to do it.

“I didn’t mean for that meme to even become a meme, and then it kind of just went all over the world. So it’s been kind of funny.”

Cuningham had to clear the air. She made it clear that it was not her idea, and that she was merely giving the kids what they wanted. Then again, the 29-year-old has never turned down the chance to relive the pointing meme whenever an opportunity presents itself.

Cunningham and Co. have a few days off before their next game. They are coming off back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday and now get a couple of days of rest. Their next game is on Wednesday when they host the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a home matchup. That will be their last game before the WNBA All-Star break.
