Chicago Bears RB curiously misses practice, OL makes surprise change

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai

The Chicago Bears are waiting for the pads to come on before training camp really gets going, but Friday’s practice had a couple of notable things happen to end the month of July.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, running back Kyle Monangai missed practice for the second day in a row. It’s unclear why the second-year running back was absent.

The Bears expect big things from Monangai this season. As a rookie, he ran for 783 yards and five touchdowns.

Chicago made a switch at left tackle for the first team. Veteran OT Braxton Jones had been practicing with the first team to start camp, as Ozzy Trapilo could miss the entire 2026 season as he recovers from an injury he suffered in the Bears’ win over the Green Bay Packers in the Wild-Card Round.

Kiran Amegadjie received first-team reps on Friday. Amegadjie, a 2024 third-round pick by the Bears, has appeared in just six games and started in one game.

Jones wasn’t bothered by the change on Friday.

“I assumed that it would be like that,” Jones said, via ESPN. “Obviously, they left it at it is a competition at the end of the day. Regardless of that, wherever we’re put, ones, twos, threes, you’ve got to go perform and do your thing regardless.”

Jones, a 2022 fifth-round pick by the Bears, signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the team in free agency this year. He’s appeared in 46 games and started in 44 games. Jones admitted he struggled last season because he didn’t feel his ankle was 100 percent, something that isn’t an issue in training camp this summer.

“Last year I mentally wanted to be there but I physically was not,” Jones said. “That battle, a lot of people would never understand. I’m so blessed for that battle and I just thank God, genuinely, for showing me his light.”

For Jones and Amegadjie, the battle for the starting left tackle will really begin when the pads come on in August.
