Chicago Bears: When Maxx Crosby could be available for trade
Maxx Crosby was happy to return to the Las Vegas Raiders after an embarrassing situation this spring when a failed physical caused the Baltimore Ravens to back out of a trade before the start of the league’s new year in March.
Crosby was frustrated with the Raiders deciding to end his season two games early due to an injury. He went on to have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and did not participate in OTAs or mandatory minicamp practices, targeting training camp for his return.
It remains to be seen if Crosby will choose to stay with the Raiders if they have a losing season or will jump for a chance to play for a contender near the trade deadline in the upcoming season. The Chicago Bears were reportedly one of the teams that checked in on Crosby’s trade price in the offseason.
On Wednesday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk told “The Score” that he thinks Crosby could be traded if Las Vegas gets off to a slow start this fall.
“The one thing that I think we’re all continuing to lose sight of is, if the Raiders start off struggling like they have most of the years since the last time they went to the Super Bowl in 2002, I still think Max Crosby can get traded,” Florio said.
“Once he’s cleared to practice and play, and that concern that kept the Ravens from moving forward goes away, and once the Raiders stink, if they do, I think this Max Crosby thing is going to come back to the front burner, and he’s going to be a hot name as the trade deadline approaches… I think Max Crosby still has a very good chance of being traded, even though he’s now of a mindset that he’d like to stick around.”

The Bears could use a veteran defense end to improve their pass rush after not making a notable move to upgrade the defensive line this offseason. Crosby is a two-time All-Pro with 69.5 sacks in the league since he was taken in the fourth round of the 2019 draft by the Raiders.
In addition to being a strong pass-rusher, Crosby is a solid run defender.
Of course, Chicago will want to see how Crosby plays to start the season before trading for him. There is a concern about his knee long-term after the Ravens backed out of the trade.
The Bears can’t afford to take on Crosby’s contract, especially with some 2023 and 2024 first-round picks needing contract extensions soon, if the defensive end can’t be counted on to stay healthy and play at an elite level.
