Chicago Cubs hit with strong Alex Bregman accusation

When the Chicago Cubs signed Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract in free agency, many were skeptical. It seemed like a awful lot of money to give an aging player who hasn’t really been elite in years.

Nevertheless, the Cubs needed a bat, especially after Kyle Tucker’s departure, so Bregman was the choice.

Needless to say, Bregman’s first few months in Chicago have not exactly gone according to plan. He is slashing just .241/.340/.345 with seven home runs and 32 RBI over 403 plate appearances, and if he doesn’t improve, it will be good for the worst season of his career.

Last year, Bregman posted an .821 OPS across 495 trips to the plate for the Boston Red Sox, and he owns a lifetime .270/.363/.471 slash line. So clearly, Bregman has not been living up to expectations. It doesn’t help that his attitude hasn’t exactly been great, either.

And heading into the Cubs’ Tuesday matchup against the Baltimore Orioles, they were hit with a rather strong accusation regarding Bregman due to his spot in the lineup.

Bregman was batting second for the Orioles game, this in spite of the fact that he hit just .200 in June and is batting .188 thus far in July.

Jordan Campbell of Cubbies Crib was none too pleased with Craig Counsell’s decision, and he made sure to let Chicago hear about it a recent piece.

“It’s entirely possible that the Cubs reach a point in the season where Bregman has turned the page from these struggles. Until that happens, the decision is clear. Bregman needs to be moved down in the starting lineup, considering they are leaving scoring opportunities on the table,” Campbell wrote. “That’s a luxury the Cubs can’t afford at the moment.”

Campbell focused specifically on Bregman’s struggles with runners in scoring position, noting that he is batting just .184 with a .556 OPS in those scenarios. That’s in stark contrast with his career numbers, as he is a lifetime .282/.382/.496 hitter with men in scoring position.

The 2-hole is generally reserved for one of your best sluggers, and Bregman has certainly not represented that for the Cubs in 2026.

It might be time for Counsell to take action and send a message to the star third baseman.
