Chicago Cubs get Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor in last-hour trade with New York Mets
The Chicago Cubs made no secret of the fact that they wanted to acquire no less than three pitchers ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Over the last 24 hours, they certainly have done their very best to do so.
On Sunday night, it was reported that they acquired two-time All-Star starter Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays. Then on Monday, they got Braxton Garrett a from the Miami Marlins, and Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels.
But they were not done. Just ahead of the deadline, Chicago nabbed one of the bigger names left on the market.

Despite meeting their goal of three new arms, Chicago was not done. They also have acquired starting pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets:
The Chicago Cubs are acquiring right-hander Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets for infielder Jefferson Rojas, sources tell ESPN. The deal is pending medical review.

Holmes is currently on the 60-day IL after suffering a fractured fibula back in May when he was hit by a line drive. However, he has completed two rehab starts already and is close to returning. So far in 2026, Holmes is 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA.
What makes the addition of Holmes so much sweeter is that he was reportedly a target of the hated Milwaukee Brewers.
And speaking of the Brewers, their former outfielder, Taylor, is hitting .241/.290/.503 with 10 home runs and 28 RBI in 67 games this season.
Obviously, he is familiar with manager Craig Counsell, who was with him in Milwaukee before Taylor was traded to the Mets following the 2023 season.
