“It does suck”: Bears backup QB Tyson Bagent makes honest admission

NFL: Chicago Bears at Tyson Bagent

Tyson Bagent seized a rare opportunity on Saturday. He started against the Cleveland Browns to open the Chicago Bears’ preseason slate. The coaching staff rarely gave the quarterback playing time in his first three NFL seasons. Being the QB1 gave him the chance to prove his worth and gain more reps. However, he acknowledged that he failed to show his 100%.

Bagent completed 13-of-22 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 34-10 win. Case Keenum also played some snaps, recording 9-of-10 completions for 151 yards and two touchdowns, while Miller Moss went 3-of-8 for 48 yards.

Bagent entered the league in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. He climbed the Bears’ depth chart and secured a spot on the final 53-man roster despite starting his pro career buried in the pecking order.

Chicago Bears: Tyson Bagent holds himself to a high standard

The 26-year-old expressed disappointment at himself for failing to complete all his passes. He has set a high bar but understands that he can’t always have a perfect game.

“I think for the most part, I’m not upset about where I’m at at all,” Bagent said. “I think I’ve been playing pretty well since we got here. But I will say every time I leave practice, I think to my head about what happened and I go watch the tape and I wonder how in the world I didn’t go 100 percent completion percentage and all everything. It does suck to think like that, because once again, unless you’re Case Keenum today, nobody goes 100 percent.

“It stings a little bit to have that thought process, but as long as I can be pissed off about not going 100%, I can still go 80% on a bad day, which I’m cool with that.”

Chicago will next face the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday at Paycor Stadium. The team hasn’t announced the starting quarterback yet. However, Bagent could get more runs and have another shot at delivering better numbers.
