OTL: Do the Ravens Finally Have a Fearsome WR Room?
It’s August and Training Camp is in full swing, so naturally, Ravens fans are talking about the Wide Receiver group. This time, though, it involves a long-term extension for a home-grown player – Crazy, right?
Yes, Baltimore finally came to terms with Year 4 wideout Zay Flowers:
Just in: Baltimore’s two-time Pro-Bowl WR Zay Flowers reached agreement today with the Ravens on a four-year, $140 million extension that includes $108 million guaranteed, per his agency @WinSportsGroup. pic.twitter.com/EUvJ21k2AE

For more on Flowers’ deal, I’ll leave it to GM Eric DeCosta, HC Jesse Minter, and reporter Jeff Zrebiec:

Undoubtedly, $140M will beg questions. I, for one, was thrilled to see the news. Still, the names surrounding Flowers are big, so it’s understandable that many will doubt where he fits on this list:
The $35M per year extension for Zay Flowers ties him with Justin Jefferson in new-money average per year.
1) Jaxon Smith-Njigba: $42.15M
2) Ja’Marr Chase: $40.25M
3) Drake London: $35.25M
4) Zay Flowers: $35M
T-4) Justin Jefferson: $35M
6) CeeDee Lamb: $34M https://t.co/N2YCFEvprj— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 4, 2026
Before going too deep into the numbers, though, it’s important to understand the real financial impact of the Flowers extension. First, Brian McFarland and others break down the numbers:
So, a 4-yr extension on the 2 yrs remaining on his deal will keep Zay under contract for 6 yrs. He was due $2.664M in 2026 & $27.298M in 2027, so adding the $140M in new money for the extension means the total deal is $169.962M over 6 yrs ($28.327M/yr). https://t.co/ykq1gHj13D
— Brian McFarland (@RavensSalaryCap) August 4, 2026
Also, since Flowers was only due $2.664M in cash in 2026 (the only thing that can be restructured as part of an extension), this deal will definitely increase his 2026 Cap number, likely by $4-8M depending on the structure. So, TBD til we see more details. https://t.co/gtP0GcIEj2
— Brian McFarland (@RavensSalaryCap) August 4, 2026
By reaching the contract extension with Zay Flowers, the Ravens now have him under contract through the 2031 season.
Flowers is due about a total of $30M in 2026 and 2027 plus another $140M with the extension.
So, the Ravens will pay him a total of $170M over the next six…
— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) August 4, 2026
I’m sure I could find it, but I’d imagine Flowers had one of the highest 5th year options for a receiver all time at $27.2M (for example Chase was $21.8M, Jettas was $19.7M). So any contract analysis has to include that Flowers was already guaranteed $27M for 2027 https://t.co/rlYxtJcPxf
— Shaun Newkirk (@Shauncore) August 4, 2026
Further, we all know the impact that yearly Salary Cap increases have on player contracts. In a few years, I reckon Flowers extension will at least look like fair value:
U got Puka, St. Brown and Pickens bout to take the market into the mid 40s. Lamb, Nabers and Jefferson gonna take it to the high 40s and Chase will likely push it past 50 in the next 2/3 off seasons. 35 for Zay will b a bargain I can assure u
— Brent Giauque (@brent_giauque) August 4, 2026
Zay Flowers was 4th among WRs in terms of Yards Per Route Run and 6th in receiving yards in the regular season in 2025.
Also just 25 years old. $35m per year is very much market value imo.
— Gordon McGuinness (@GordonNFL) August 4, 2026
Importantly, however, I do believe Flowers has earned big money. If we’re basing things around names, even Bleacher Report has him approaching the league’s Top-10 WRs:
BEST WIDE RECEIVERS IN THE NFL
44) Tyreek
42) Deebo
20) Diggs
14) Nabers
12) Davante
6) Amon-Ra
4) PukaFULL LIST HERE: https://t.co/bCsrzrD4FZ pic.twitter.com/hIUUv3TeoF

Simply put, public perception doesn’t match Flowers’ production over his first three seasons:
Since 2023, among WRs with at least 600 routes run Zay Flowers has an 87th percentile yards per route run and 89th percentile passer rating when targeted
Think that he’s the probably the WR with the biggest gap between public perception and production stats. The money on this… https://t.co/fFcAQQTOTW
— Tej Seth (@tejfbanalytics) August 4, 2026
When you consider the year-over-year improvements we’ve seen, there’s real reason to believe Flowers will continue to flourish throughout the next few seasons. Even if he doesn’t, he’s already a great weapon for QB Lamar Jackson:
Zay Flowers Year 1… 858 yards
Zay Flowers Year 2… 1059 yards
Zay Flowers Year 3… 1211 yardsExtremely underrated.
He earned this massive deal.— Sam Block (@theblockspot) August 4, 2026
Passer rating when targeted in 2025
1⃣ – Puka Nacua | 126.4
2⃣ – Jaxon Smith-Njigba | 120.5
3⃣ – George Pickens | 120.1
4⃣ – Zay Flowers | 113.6
5⃣ – Amon-Ra St. Brown | 110.6 pic.twitter.com/c4lMMLAUDm— Chris Cooper (@ChrisCooper_NFL) August 4, 2026
Good on the Ravens for getting out ahead of the WR market, Zay flowers has broke pretty much every ravens WR record
He’s a very good player who was probably gonna go for 1500 yards this year and command a larger amount.
Good stuff

Tough to guard Zay Flowers one-on-one

Lastly, there are two intangibles to consider. For Flowers alone, it’s important to recognize the general approach he takes each day:
Things non-Ravens fans miss about Zay Flowers and why he deserves his extension (production aside):
• Elite teammate
• Works his ass off every day
• Leaves his ego at the door
• Does the dirty work in the run game without complaint
• Brings consistent positive energyThose…

Flowers was lauded for the person he is in the pre- and post-draft process, and Garrett is right to recognize that. Perhaps more importantly, though, is this extension as a sign of improvement across the organization. For years, Baltimore “couldn’t develop WRs.” Now, they have a home-grown extension to prove that they can:
There was a time in franchise history when the Ravens rarely even took meaningful swings at drafting wide receivers. Making that kind of commitment to a homegrown success is a big deal.
— Luke Jones (@BaltimoreLuke) August 4, 2026
But Tuesday’s WR news wasn’t all about Flowers. According to a number of reporters, it was a big day for others, as well:
Backup QB Tyler Huntley just hit Devontez Walker with a bomb up the sideline with TJ Tampa in coverage. Really nice throw and fingertip catch. Offense has been moving.
— Brian Wacker (@brianwacker1) August 4, 2026
Ravens WR LaJohntay Wester is having his best day of training camp.
— Sam Cohn (@samdcohn) August 4, 2026
Ja’Kobi Lane has been the star of this practice, but Elijah Sarratt had his moment to end the day. He beat fellow rookie Chandler Rivers, who was all over him, for a stretching catch.
Lane and Lajohntay Wester were down the field in a flash to celebrate him.
— Giana Han (@giana_jade) August 4, 2026
There’s no doubt, this is all good news. Ja’Kobi Lane stole the show, though:

— JacksonMuse (@Jackson_Muse) August 4, 2026
Lane torched T.J. Tampa down the right sidelines in 1-on-1’s a few minutes later and made another tough catch. Big day for the rook. https://t.co/kpFwAg6Ol1
— Nikhil Mehta (@nikknowsball) August 4, 2026
Ravens WR Ja’Kobi Lane makes one of the best catches you’ll ever see, pulling in a 20-yard Lamar Jackson pass with one hand along the sideline while falling on his back.
Lane, a rookie third-round pick, has had an impressive start to his first training camp.
— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) August 4, 2026
Lane just made another nifty catch on a deep fade in a one on one vs Tampa. The hype train isn’t slowing down.
— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) August 4, 2026
“Torched”. Its so easy to forget Lane ran a legit 4.4 https://t.co/SrloSOCBJA

Personally, I expected Elijah Sarratt to be the rookie to make a bigger impact in Year 1. While that may still be true, the raw talent Lane offers might also turn into on-field production. Remember, many former players and wideouts were high on the USC product:
Steve Smith never lied https://t.co/ckNSTfGAgr
— STONE (@stone_2x) August 4, 2026
If I tell you a player is legit..he’s legit… and yes I truly believe I scout players better than a lot of people! First round talent! https://t.co/kouhxhgxzA
— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) August 4, 2026
If Smith Sr. and Bryant are right, and if Lane can continue to jell with Jackson early, the breakout might be real:
Jesse Minter said Ja’Kobi Lane’s performance today is helping build trust with Lamar Jackson. pic.twitter.com/Nnz30UljB4
— Giana Han (@giana_jade) August 4, 2026
Growing chemistry and confidence between No. 8 and Ja’Kobi is huge. We all know how much that matters to Lamar.
You’re looking at a true X option. Someone who gives the jump call component Likely gave but more speed, fluidity downfield. #Ravens #RavensFlock https://t.co/jfqU6gO4af
— Dev Panchwagh (@devpanchwagh) August 4, 2026
Baltimore has one wideout locked up and another looking the part early. This sure is fun!
