RAVENS vs. EAGLES: What to Look for Tonight!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Staples once featured a Back-to-School ad that showed parents gleefully shopping for school supplies while kids sported frowns influenced by the understanding that summer break was nearing its end, all playing out to the tune of “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. My sister embraced the ad and the parental vibe so thoroughly that whenever I’d see the ad, I pictured her prancing down Staples’ aisles in a way that would make Dancing with the Stars contestants green with envy.

I get the vibe, only mine isn’t inspired by Staples but rather, the return of Ravens football. And many here in The Land of Pleasant Living would concur. Football is in the air, figuratively and literally. The preseason is underway.

Tonight at 7, the lights come on at The Bank as the Ravens host the Philadelphia Eagles. And for the first time in nearly two decades, a Ravens season opens — preseason or otherwise — without John Harbaugh pacing the home sideline. Jesse Minter gets his first taste of the big chair while Lamar Jackson will be safely tucked away in a baseball cap. Still, there’s plenty of meat on this bone for the observant fan. Tyler Huntley is expected to get the start, with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano handling the bulk of the evening’s snaps.

Ravens first preseason game without John Harbaugh since 2007

Preseason openers are never about the score. They’re about the hungry guys — the ones fighting for jobs, roles and respect. Here are five things I’ll be watching tonight, in no particular order.

1. Depth across the offensive line

Eric DeCosta rebuilt this line in front of Lamar, and while Ronnie Stanley, Roger Rosengarten, first-round rookie Vega Ioane and the returning John Simpson give us a decent picture of four-fifths of the starting unit, the pivot remains a mystery. Tyler Linderbaum‘s free-agency departure left a crater in the middle, and the battle to fill it — Ethan Pocic, Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn, Corey Bullock — is the most important position fight in camp. New O-line coach Dwayne Ledford has said this thing could go down to the final week of camp, so tonight’s live reps matter. Watch the snap-to-step quickness of each center against Philly’s interior. And keep an eye on the swing candidates behind the starters — Andrew Vorhees, Emery Jones Jr., Carson Vinson and UDFA Diego Pounds. If last season taught us anything, it’s that you’re only as good as your sixth, seventh and eighth linemen. Huntley clapping furiously for a snap that never came in practice last week was a reminder: this group needs game reps, badly.

2. The young pass rushers

Thirty sacks. That’s all the 2025 Ravens managed — tied for third fewest in the league — and it’s the biggest reason Minter and DC Anthony Weaver were brought in to breathe fire back into this defense. Trey Hendrickson was the headline addition but tonight isn’t about Trey. It’s about Mike Green, the second-year edge who Weaver says is “milliseconds away” from a double-digit sack season, and rookie second-rounder Zion Young, who has been, in Weaver’s words, as good as advertised since the spring. Add Adisa Isaac, still searching for his footing, and Tavius Robinson, who has expanded his rush repertoire and tormented Ravens tackles all camp, and you’ve got a young, hungry room. Green flashed constantly as a rookie without finishing. Tonight, against Eagles backups, we need to see finishes — not almosts. Weaver showed Green a film reel of “almost sacks” this offseason. It’s time to start a new reel.

3. The ascent of T.J. Tampa

Quietly — and quiet is the operative word — the third-year corner has been one of the best players in Owings Mills this summer. The Banner’s Jonas Shaffer put it perfectly: Tampa stands out by not standing out. Quarterbacks simply aren’t testing him. The former fourth rounder entered camp as the No. 4 corner and has been forcing his way up the board, breaking up passes, ripping the ball away from Rasheen Ali for a turnover, and holding his own in one-on-ones. With Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey both nursing bumps and bruises, the CB depth chart is being stress-tested, and Tampa is answering the bell. Tonight he should see extended run. If the coverage stays sticky against live bullets, the Ravens may have found the kind of homegrown corner development that’s been this franchise’s calling card since the days of Chris McAlister.

4. Can Ja’Kobi Lane take that next step?

You’ve seen the highlights — the whole town has. The third-round rookie out of USC has been the undisputed star of camp, making circus catches on what feels like a daily basis. ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, who has covered this team for 27 years, says he’s never seen a rookie have a camp quite like it. The one-handed sideline grab against Wiggins. Boxing out Tampa for 35 yards. Even throwing the block that sprung Derrick Henry. Lamar has noticed, kneeling for one-on-one chats with the kid after red-zone drills. But here’s the thing about practice legends: pads against your own teammates isn’t the same as Saturday night under the lights. Devontez Walker and fellow rookie Elijah Sarratt are breathing down his neck for those three-wide snaps next to Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Tonight is Lane’s chance to prove the hype travels.

5. The play of the rookie tight ends

Isaiah Likely is a Giant. Charlie Kolar is a Charger. Mark Andrews, entering year nine, is the last man standing, with blocking specialist Durham Smythe alongside. That leaves fourth-rounder Matt Hibner — whom the Ravens traded up to grab — and fifth-rounder Josh Cuevas to fill the pass-catching void. The early returns are intriguing. Cuevas caught five touchdowns over a two-day stretch of red-zone work and has a natural feel for soft spots in coverage. Hibner has been the steadier hand, though both have battled the occasional case of the dropsies. Remember, OC Declan Doyle is a former tight ends coach whose Bears unit topped 1,000 receiving yards last season. He wants to weaponize this position. Tonight we find out whether these kids can block, sit down in zones, and — most importantly — catch the football when it counts.

Kick back, crack open a cold one, and enjoy some meaningless football that for some, means quite a bit.

The Minter era starts tonight.

Ain’t it wonderful?
