OTL: Good News on Zay Flowers as Season Approaches
We’re officially one week away from the first game of the 2026/2027 NFL season!
Meanwhile, Tuesday was a meaningful days for a few reasons. First, happy belated birthday to DL Calais Campbell, who turned the big 4-0!
Happy Birthday @CalaisCampbell!!

For those keeping score at home, that makes Campbell the 6th-oldest player in the league, interestingly placing him behind two former Ravens:

Tuesday was also the 30th anniversary of Baltimore’s return to the NFL, as the Ravens hosted the Raiders on September 1, 1996:

Looking ahead, though, Charm City isn’t just happy to be here. Now, we’re aiming for a third Super Bowl title. Luckily, the NFL on Fox folks feel the Ravens will be in the mix as one of the top contenders. Here’s hoping they’re right:

Looking a bit deeper at the numbers, it makes sense that Baltimore will at least be in the playoff hunt. Per Timo Riske, the Ravens are considered a Top-4 team in the league. Of those in the Top-10 or so, Baltimore also has the easiest schedule entering the season:
The market hasn’t really moved after the Aaron Donald news, but they were already considered the best team before that and it was already expected anway. pic.twitter.com/LUhUA1sr3P

Beyond that, some project Baltimore to have the third-best offense in the league:

Why? Well, the prospect of OC Declan Doyle’s offense is incredibly exciting. The players are, too.
We’ve talked ad nauseum about Ja’Kobi Lane’s potential, but the hype is real. The MMQB agrees:
Which first- and second-year players are primed for a breakout season? @MattVerderame reached out to NFL execs and coaches to get a list of 10 players.https://t.co/t7cmLDEEZV

Importantly, Lane won’t have to be the team’s top target, though. While he, Rashod Bateman, Devontez Walker and Elijah Sarratt will make a difference, I expect big things from Zay Flowers. Luckily, it looks like Flowers will be ready to kick off his campaign in Week 1 against the Colts:
Zay Flowers is expected to practice in FULL capacity next week, per @mzenitz.

I didn’t feel terribly concerned about Flowers’ status, but any time missed will make a difference. He’s always been a huge part of Baltimore’s passing attack, and with a new contract to boot, that role may grow:
WRs who have accounted for the highest percentage of team receiving yards WHILE ON THE FIELD over the past two seasons:
48% – Puka Nacua
43% – Rashee Rice
41% – Nico Collins
39% – Malik Nabers

35% – Ja’Marr Chase

On the defensive side of the ball, it feels like we’ve already got proof of what’s to come. Still, going back to that article on first- and second-year breakout candidates, are S Malaki Starks and EDGE Mike Green worth mentioning? Starks may be less of a surprise breakout, but Green’s preseason PFF grades check out:

I’m thrilled to see how both perform early in the year.
Still, there’s one other facet of success to consider: Vibes. With near-sweeping change in Charm City, is it possible that could make an impact? RB Austin Ekeler weighed in:
NFL RB @AustinEkeler on Jesse Minter and the new Ravens coaching staff: “New staff in the building gives the organization new energy… It takes the politics out when you get in new coaches. There’s no one taking sides.” #RavensFlock
— Glenn Clark (@GlennClarkRadio) September 1, 2026
Alongside the obvious impact (whether good or bad) that’ll be felt by replacing John Harbaugh with Jesse Minter is the cosmetic update Baltimore unveiled with their new uniforms.
While it’s impossible to quantify that, what’s the famous saying? Look good, feel good, play good. Let’s hope that comes to fruition a few times this year:
The Ravens announced their uniform-inspired theme games:
Sept. 20 vs. Saints. “White Noise.” The Ravens will sport their all-white uniforms with Purple Rising helmets. The team is asking all fans to wear white for their home opener.

Needless to say, M&T Bank Stadium will be rocking for these three. I think that refreshing feeling to the Ravens will mean the bank will be back to full force throughout the season.
With that in mind, might Baltimore’s record in one-score games help turn the tide back toward success?
2025 Record in 1 possession games
The top 3 teams in one-score game record are:
1. Denver Broncos – 11-2 (84.6%)
2. San Francisco 49ers – 5-1 (83.3%)
3. Los Angeles Chargers – 6-2 (75.0%) pic.twitter.com/Bo09no9g5c— Gridiron Stats and Info (@GridironInfo_) September 1, 2026
Coming off a season in which their record was one of the league’s worst, we know well that any improvement could be all the difference this time around.
Lastly, regardless of how the upcoming season goes, it’s important to remember that some (and perhaps most) things transcend sports. Tuesday served as a reminder of that, with much of the Ravens community coming out in droves for the memorial of OJ Brigance:
Amazing tribute to OJ Brigance this morning in Bowie. Irv Smith & owner Jim Speros of the Stallions & Ozzie Newome, Brian Billick, Dick Cass & a ton of Ravens staff & players: Ray, Ed Reed, Todd Heap, Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper, Michael McCrary, Ed Mulitalo, Ray Rice
— Keith Mills (@KeithMills1090) September 1, 2026
The list goes on. Ray Rice, Spencer Folau. OJs dad spoke while Chanda Brigance gave the final tribute to her late husband and was, as you may expect if you know her, tremendous!! Scott Garceau, Mike Gathagan there as well. The perfect celebration for a 1 of Kind Gentleman

Brigance will surely continue to be an inspiration in Baltimore and around the country. If you want to do your part to make sure he’s immortalized, learn more about his mission and consider donating with the link below:
