NYC and blue states, red states, blue cities, and red cities
Want to think of something scary for Halloween night? Consider the modern American city.
In 2025, the handwriting is clearly on the wall. New York City is evidence of this, if we needed more. Whatever the results of next week’s election, it is clear that the City – and the entire urban area it anchors – is in serious trouble.
Why? We at TPOL submit that this is exactly what we should expect of parasites. Ultimately, most parasites kill their host/victim. And as a result, die themselves. Government and its officials and employees are those parasites on the American body politic. And stupid.
American cities (at least in their present form) are doomed. The more extreme of us would point out, “the sooner, the better.” The vast megalopoli are ungovernable; their economic systems function (barely) in spite of their governance and society; their societies are decadent and decaying ever more rapidly.
And virtually every action taken by governmental bodies adds to (and even speeds up) that process of decay. Even while they proclaim all the wonderful things they are doing. Are going to do. Have done.
In our urban areas, the signs are obvious.
The horrific living conditions are amazing: the underclasses, the financial and other predators, the crime rates, the deteriorating infrastructure are all pieces of a very nasty picture. What was once limited to a few neighborhoods (the ghettos and barrios, often) expanded to include more and more of the core cities. But today, those conditions have expanded into not just the inner suburbs, but also the outer suburbs, the exburbs, and even nearby rural and fronteir areas.
Contagion spreads. Parasites don’t just consume their hosts. The growing damage to the victim manifests itself on the outside, and even to other individuals. Of course, that is of no interest, and no concern, to the parasite. Is that not reflected in the actions and words of the big-city mayors and councils or commissions? Much less the bureaucrats that work for them? San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, all the other cities take actions that damage not just the suburbs or the nearby rural areas, but entire States. For example, Chicago’s bad conditions negatively impact not just Illinois but Indiana and Wisconsin. Both directly and indirectly.
The worse things get in the urban core, the greater the negative impact on people dozens and hundreds of miles away. And not just in political matters, such as voting. But economically, socially, and morally: crime spreads, as more and more lawbreakers prey on more and more people.
Indeed, it is not too much of a stretch to point out that urban conditions have never been worse. At least, relative to small towns in rural and frontier areas. Worse than perhaps any time in American history.
For the last 250 years, urban dwellers have generally had a great advantage over those who farm, ranch, mine, produce timber, and who live outside the urban areas. In cities, for example a century ago in the 1920s, you had a water and sewer system: flush toilets and running water and convenient disposal of human and other wastes. Rural folks had to get their water from wells or natural bodies of water (often hauling it by horse-drawn water). And they either dug holes for privies or had “on-site” waste water treatment: lagoons (open bodies of water) or septic systems. Electricity? Forget about it unless you could afford and find fuel for generators: windmills might pump water but wouldn’t produce electricity: rural towns might have their own generating station (either privately or publicly owned). But farmers, ranchers, foresters, etc. didn’t. have such luxuries. Nor home delivery of dairy products, ice, or coal for heating and cooking.
Today, more and more we see the necessities of life (and even the luxuries) are produced and transported outside the major urban areas. The major exception to that is the vast amount of manufactures imported by sea: the ports are all in the big urban zones. But as American business brings more and more manufacturing back home – or at least to Mexico and Canada – the less that is a concern. Modern communications, modern transport, modern manufacturing makes rural and frontier folks less and less dependent on the urban areas, when you get right down to it.
We just need to recognize and understand we can live without the megaplexes. We can still have the stuff we need, and most of what we want – the luxuries. Without getting abused and exploited by the urban areas and their elites.
CITIES: Doomed, and the sooner the better for the cause of liberty: peace and prosperity, life and liberty!
