It’s the Year 2029: Christian Goes to Jail for Sharing the Gospel With a Jewish Person

    Hello again fellow Lamar Countians. Picture the title of this week’s column. But wait, it must be science fiction since I said the year 2029. Is it? “Well, you must be talking about another country, that won’t happen in the good ole USA.” Think so? Keep on reading please. I have written numerous times about antisemitism and the Jewish people. Whether it’s the nation of Israel or Jewish people living in our country, does their history and possible future mean they should get special treatment and have a special category of ‘hate crime?’ What about Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and more? Someone make it make sense, because it sure doesn’t to me! Hate without a cause is sin and a crime is a crime. As I shared 5 weeks ago, the original meaning of the word ‘semitic’ included the Arab people and was hijacked by Wilhelm Maar in 1879- a true antisemitic as we continue to use the word today.     I have also shared about an antisemitism bill that was proposed months ago. Well guess what? The House passed it last week. According to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) website: “the following non-legally binding working definition of antisemitism: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.” You may think, “well, it’s not legally binding.” But if the language is used to become a law in the U.S. which arguably is unconstitutional? It goes on to say: “Contemporary examples of antisemitism in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere could, taking into account the overall context, include, but are not limited to: 1) Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion. 2) Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions. 3) Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews. 4) Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g. gas chambers) or intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist Germany and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust). 5) Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust. 6) Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations. 7) Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor. 8) Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation. 9) Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis. 10) Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis. 11) Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.” You can read the whole thing yourself online here: holocaustremembrance.com/ resources/ working-definition-antisemitism. 

    Would these things be wrong? Most of them for sure, maybe all of them. Look at #9 again! Some of these are a 1st Amendment violation. Number 9 is technically unbiblical and is the one that some Christian leaders believe will eventually lead to include sharing the gospel with Jewish people and that could lead to make sharing the gospel with anyone illegal. Will we obey God or man?  If the Senate didn’t already pass it during the week between me typing this and you reading it, I strongly urge you to call Senators Tuberville and Britt and tell them to vote against it!

    The Jewish Christian Apostle Paul said he had heaviness of heart and continued sorrow over his desire for Israel to be saved (Rom. 9 & 10). The Jewish human aspect of the God-man Jesus Christ pronounced ‘woes’ and called the Scribes and Pharisees ‘hypocrites.’ The Jews of Jesus’ day said of Jesus’ crucifixion, “crucify Him, let His blood be on our hands.” Will this be the last time I can legally quote these things? So, is the title of this column that far-fetched? Could it be sooner?
