The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, or CJNG) is currently in a state of leadership flux following the death of its co-founder and long-time leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”. With El Mencho’s death, potential successors include senior members such as Audias Flores Silva (“El Jardinero”), Juan Carlos Valencia González (“El 03″), and Gonzalo Mendoza Gaitán (“El Sapo”). Many other top leaders, including El Mencho’s son (“El Menchito”) and brother (Antonio Oseguera-Cervantes), are currently in U.S. custody.
In February 2025, the U.S. government designated the CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). The cartel operates in at least 21 to 27 of Mexico’s 32 states and has a presence in all 50 U.S. states and over 40 countries. The CJNG is known for extreme paramilitary violence, being a pioneer in the use of weaponized drones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to attack security forces and rivals.
