An artificial intelligence-powered avatar of Jesus Christ, known as “Deus in Machina,” has been installed at St. Peter’s Chapel in Lucerne, Switzerland, allowing visitors to engage in conversations with a computer-generated representation of the Son of God. Developed by a team from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the chapel’s theologian, Marco Schmid, the project emerged from two months of collaborative experimentation. The AI Jesus, capable of conversing in over 100 languages, offers advice based on biblical scripture and has engaged in approximately 900 conversations with people of various ages and faith backgrounds, including Christians, atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Buddhists, and Taoists. Visitors have discussed topics ranging from love and the afterlife to war, suffering, and the existence of God, as well as more sensitive issues like the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality and sexual abuse scandals.

The installation, which operates within a confessional booth, is not intended to replicate traditional confession, and users are warned against sharing personal details, acknowledging that interactions are at their own risk. While some critics have labeled the project “blasphemous” or the “work of the devil,” the developers note that the AI responds fairly well to controversial topics without requiring specific safeguards. The project has been described as pioneering in exploring how people interact with digital representations of the divine.

In addition to the Swiss installation, several other AI-driven platforms claim to offer interactions with Jesus. “Text With Jesus,” an AI chatbot app launched in 2025, allows users to message biblical figures like Jesus and Moses, receiving responses based on scripture. The app has drawn thousands of users, with its creator asserting that AI can help people explore religious texts. Other platforms, such as AI Jesus, Virtual Jesus, and Jesus AI, also offer chatbot experiences, with some asserting they are “Jesus Christ” in a literal sense. One such platform, AI Jesus, is described as a satirical take on spiritual consumerism, blending faith, technology, and product endorsements in a surreal experience. Meanwhile, AI-generated images of Jesus have become widespread on social media, often depicting him with idealized, rugged features, a trend attributed to the patterns learned by AI from existing artistic depictions
