Two U.S. service members were killed and a third is missing after a wave of Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks struck the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on Friday. Four other U.S. troops were wounded, marking the first American fatalities since a preliminary ceasefire collapsed. In response, the U.S. military launched retaliatory airstrikes on Saturday to “swiftly punish” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The sudden escalation cuts across several countries and has led to retaliatory U.S. operations across Iran.
Along with Jordan, Iranian strikes have impacted energy and civilian infrastructure in allied nations like Kuwait and Bahrain. President Donald Trump ordered targeted strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps capabilities to punish the regime for the attacks
These deaths mark the first hostile combat fatalities suffered by American forces since March, following the collapse of a brief, fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. The current escalating air war has seen eight consecutive days of U.S. retaliatory strikes inside Iran aiming to restore deterrence and protect shipping corridors around the Strait of Hormuz.
This week’s incident brings the total number of American military deaths to 16 since broader Iranian hostilities began on 28 February 2026.
