Philosophy - Psychology - Dogs Chase Cars... adage comes to life in new tale about newspapers adapting for modern times...
I have to admit, that I had looked at that title of Patrick Sangimino’s book “Dogs Chase Cars” several times. While I am aware of the phrase that can be completed with various following “but they don’t drive them,” or “what happens if they catch one,” or “they wouldn’t know what to do with it if they caught one,” and the like – seeing it on the cover of the book none of that managed to enter my mind and me “GET” the philosophical/psychological “completion of the thought” and “point” being implied by just the “shorter” cut beginning of the phrase the title was/is to suggest relating in the story behind the cover UNTIL Patrick “spelled it out directly” to/for me during our discussion.
THIS all part of CTP BOOKS / AUTHORS WEEKS (BAW) across 25+ Audio only platforms (with several BAW episodes also appearing across 5 Video platforms)!
So, perhaps, first you could chime-in via the comments and let me know if “at first blush” it “CLICKED” for you or you somehow thought “Dogs” were key in/to the story strangely and questioning if indeed perhaps this is just a book about Dogs or not (how does that OLD ADAGE relate under the cover; that despite “don’t Judge book by its cover” people do)?!?!? It becomes OBVIOUS once getting into the discussion of what the book is really/ultimately about (and probably already too late – anyone may have been puzzled like I was at first likely already had their “uncertainty” cleared by my opening paragraph to this piece!
Anyway… Let’s get to the discussion I had with Patrick about his book… and after that (video) let’s see what GALAXY AI Video Summarizer has to say about it in its “breakdown” and “analysis” of the engagement.

Exploring the Evolution of Journalism and Relationships in Patrick Sangimino’s ‘Dogs Chase Cars’
October 14, 2025 4 min read Entertainment
In this blog post, we delve into the insights shared by Patrick Sangimino on the changing landscape of journalism, the importance of relationships, and the themes of his book ‘Dogs Chase Cars’. Through a candid discussion, we explore the challenges faced by the newspaper industry, the impact of technology, and the personal reflections that shape his narrative (more about Human Nature and the Human Condition, using a Newspaper guy’s situations to pass the Story along).
In this CTP episode, host Joseph M. Lenard engages in a thought-provoking discussion with author Patrick Sangimino about his book, ‘Dogs Chase Cars’, and the broader implications of the changing journalism landscape.
Joseph M. Lenard opens the podcast by welcoming listeners and introducing Patrick Sangimino, a California native and former sports columnist. Patrick shares his journey from California to the Midwest and back, highlighting his experiences in the newspaper industry.
The State of Journalism Today
Patrick’s book, ‘Dogs Chase Cars’, reflects on the downturn in the newspaper industry through the eyes of a longtime sports columnist. He notes that newspapers today are not what they used to be; they are more expensive, thinner, and less comprehensive. Patrick reminisces about the golden age of newspapers in the 1980s and 1990s, a time when journalism was a daily routine filled with rich content and community engagement.
The Impact of Technology
The advent of the internet has drastically changed the journalism landscape. Patrick discusses how many talented journalists have been laid off due to mass layoffs in the industry, raising concerns about the future of journalism and the role of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes the importance of personal relationships and the stories that shape a journalist’s career, which often get overshadowed by the pressures of the job.
The Genesis of ‘Dogs Chase Cars’
The title of Patrick’s book stems from a metaphor he encountered in high school, which he now uses to explore deeper themes in life. The story follows a sports columnist who reflects on his career and the relationships he neglected while chasing success. Patrick describes the book as a cautionary tale about balancing work and personal life, urging readers to cherish their relationships and prioritize what truly matters.
The Metaphor Behind the Title
The phrase “dogs chase cars” serves as a metaphor for life’s pursuits. Patrick explains that while chasing goals is important, one must also consider what happens when those goals are achieved. The narrative encourages readers to think about their own lives and the relationships they may have taken for granted.
The Changing Nature of Customer Service
During the conversation, Patrick and Joseph delve into the decline of customer service in various industries, including news delivery. They discuss how companies have shifted to call centers and automated systems, often sacrificing personal connections for cost savings (but it also COSTS (they lose) REVENUE as Customers/Consumers just GIVE UP and stop using some Services/Outlets entirely for other avenues/businesses). Patrick reflects on his early experiences in journalism, where customer service meant going the extra mile to ensure satisfaction, contrasting it with the impersonal nature of modern customer service.
The Importance of Personal Connections
Patrick emphasizes that personal connections are vital in any industry, especially in journalism. He shares anecdotes about how he would personally deliver newspapers to customers who reported issues, highlighting the importance of accountability and community engagement in journalism.
The Future of Journalism (vs “Reporting” (which is NOT THE SAME))
As the discussion progresses, Patrick and Joseph explore the future of journalism in the digital age. They acknowledge the challenges posed by social media and the shift in how news is consumed. Patrick points out that while technology has its benefits, it has also led to a decline in the quality of journalism, with many young journalists lacking the foundational skills necessary for effective reporting.
The Role of Fact-Checking
The conversation touches on the critical role of fact-checking in journalism. Patrick stresses that being a journalist goes beyond simply reporting what someone says; it involves verifying facts and providing context. This commitment to accuracy is essential in maintaining the integrity of journalism.
Conclusion
In wrapping up the discussion, Patrick Sangimino reflects on the lessons learned throughout his career and the importance of prioritizing relationships over professional success. His book, ‘Dogs Chase Cars’, serves as a reminder to readers about the value of human connections and the need to adapt to the changing landscape of journalism.
Joseph M. Lenard thanks Patrick for joining the podcast and encourages listeners to explore his work. The episode concludes with a reminder of the importance of substance over style in journalism and the need for thoughtful discourse in today’s fast-paced world.
