Your Stakes Are Clear. So Why Doesn’t Anyone Care?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Knowing what a character stands to lose is supposed to get readers invested in their struggle. Stakes you can see coming get readers rooting for a character. They keep readers turning pages to see how the character will edge out the odds and clear the next hurdle.

But stakes in isolation aren’t enough to get readers locked in. You can put clear stakes on every page and still lose your readers.

The problem likely isn’t with the stakes themselves. It’s how your characters—and therefore, your readers—are reacting to them.

So What?

Stakes aren’t the conflicts and tensions of your story; they’re the result of them. Stakes are consequences. They’re the risk or the payoff of every move made by your protagonist. What does the protagonist stand to lose if they fail? What do they gain if they succeed?

But consequences alone don’t create strong story stakes. Stakes apply pressure only when the consequences of an action or decision land on someone with a vested interest in avoiding (or earning) them. They should create consequences someone cares about—consequences your protagonist can’t afford to be indifferent to.

Writing advice often links strong stakes to strategies like escalating conflict and ticking clocks. These do ramp up tension, but they don’t make the consequences of the conflict or deadline matter—nor do they spell the difference between reader buy-in and disinterest.

The secret sauce to reader investment is character investment. A character who cares—who desperately, passionately cares—provokes a gut-level reaction for readers.

The Mechanics of Investment

The foundation of strong stakes is the narrative drivetrain. What does your character want badly enough to withstand everything your story will throw at them?

A clear story goal arising from a specific and personal motivation fuels your character’s persistence despite significant conflict preventing them from reaching the goal. This goal-motivation-conflict drivetrain powers a story that could only belong to this particular protagonist (the Greek term implying implies both “primary actor” and “first contestant”—the main character doing the struggling in this story).

Just as no one else possesses exactly the same motivations for attaining this goal, no one else faces the same stakes. The stakes aren’t generic risks or payoffs that apply to the anyone in this situation; they’re specific to your protagonist, making them the person with the most skin in the game.

Yet even when a protagonist cares deeply about the goal and the stakes, the emotional draw remains flat for readers unless they have a reason to care too. This happens when readers see the character as relatable, making even the broadest stakes feel personal. “We care about something bad happening to a friend far more than something bad happening to a stranger,” observes resident writing coach Jami Gold. “That’s just human nature, and so the same goes for readers.”

But all the warm, fuzzy vibes in the world won’t get readers truly locked in unless the character locks in first.

It Takes Investment to Breed Investment

The only way readers can see that a goal truly matters to your character is to witness their ongoing obsession with it. Genuine investment shows up in every scene, not just as backstory floating through the early pages. If the character isn’t continuously demonstrating their commitment, how should readers be expected to feel it?

Readers lock in only once the character locks in first. The way to demonstrate character commitment is to prove it: Dramatize their conviction on every page.

Commitment begins with a clear scene goal (that is, an incremental goal on the way to the main story goal) within the first page or so of every scene, either explicit or implied. Readers should always know what the protagonist is doing and why. Without that, scenes stop being story-driven action and become episodic entertainment instead, drifting away from the plot, the stakes … and readers.

Let readers see into your protagonist’s inner world as they continually entertain new ideas and considerations related to the goal—remember, this is your character’s genuine obsession. Show their thoughts flicking back to what they stand to lose (or gain) again and again, page after page. These brief flickers are the glue that holds the story together.

From Investment to Resonance

The emotional payoff for readers unfolds on the far side of the story, at the point when the protagonist must do something they never thought they had in them. This is the moment of sacrifice. It’s the point at which they stop protecting themselves from the stakes and act despite them—not because they’ve stopped caring about the stakes but because they must do what must be done because it must be done, stakes be damned.

This is also the point when the alchemy kicks in for readers. Readers arrive here because the stakes mattered, but they stay for what happens when the character stops needing them to. Witnessing the protagonist exceed their limits cracks opens something universal readers recognize in themselves: This is how far they might go, too, for something they need badly enough.

WRITING STRATEGIES FOR STAKES THAT REACH READERS

1. Clarify the goal-motivation-conflict drivetrain of your story, and put those elements on the page so readers know exactly what this character wants (or needs to discover).
2. Give readers reasons to connect to the character.
3. Make the stakes personal to the character.
4. Launch every scene using clear scene goals (explicitly or implicitly shown) within the first page.
5. Use your protagonist’s thoughts in every scene to reveal their ongoing obsession with the story goal.
6. Use their thoughts in every scene to show their persistent anxiety about the stakes of failure (or success).
