Canada Thought 'Attacking Trump' Worked Until Many Canadians Lost Their Jobs (Video)

In this 14 September 2026 published video, host Cash Jordan how Canada’s trade war with America just hit an unexpected roadblock.

The ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States has entered a complex phase, marked by heavy retaliatory tariffs and broader economic disruptions

Following the collapse of trade negotiations in late August, President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to enact a “dollar-for-dollar” retaliation covering more than 700 U.S. products. As both nations dig in, multiple structural and political “roadblocks” are complicating the conflict.

An analysis by University of Calgary economics professor Trevor Tombe projected that roughly 87,000 Canadian jobs are at risk under the 50 percent  U.S. tariffs. Business leaders, such as the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, warn that job losses are “inevitable” for small and medium enterprises.

The economic friction of the trade war is being severely compounded by external geopolitical factors. Small businesses operating across the border are experiencing an outsized impact, as the up to 50 percent tariff penalty hits them at the exact same time that rising energy costs stemming from the war in Iran are eroding their corporate balance sheets.

Instead of returning to the negotiating table under pressure, Canada is actively looking to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.  Prime Minister Carney hosted a massive investment summit in Toronto, targeting $1 trillion in investments over five years from global asset managers to build up domestic infrastructure, mining, and green energy. Recent trade data highlights that Canada’s exports to China surged by over 30 percent in the first half of 2026, showcasing an intentional diversification away from U.S. markets.

Canada’s retaliatory measures have been highly targeted, aiming to disrupt supply chains and put pressure on key political battlegrounds like Michigan, Ohio, and Maine ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterms. This has created domestic friction within the U.S., prompting some lawmakers to break ranks and publicly urge the White House to restart negotiations to protect border-state businesses. While President Trump recently suggested a deal could happen “fairly soon” if agricultural tariffs are resolved, Prime Minister Carney has stated Canada will only resume formal talks if Washington approaches the table with a fundamental change in attitude.
