Xenophobia & Discrimination Targets Foreign Taxi Owners in South Africa

The savages of xenophobia have now targeted foreign taxi owners. This follows the Faraday Taxi Association’s decision to ban foreign nationals from operating at its rank located in Faraday. This move has affected Zimbabwean and Mozambican taxi owners, stripping them of their livelihoods overnight.
But SANTACO, the country’s largest taxi industry body, has responded by severing its ties with the Faraday Taxi Association. SANTACO stated that the exclusion of foreign nationals violated both constitutional rights and the council’s own membership obligations.
“We cannot allow our name to be associated with conduct that strips people of dignity and economic participation.”
SANTACO has summoned the Faraday Taxi Association for a disciplinary hearing. SANTACO spokesperson Tinyiko Ntini made the remarks above, underscoring the organisation’s stance against the exclusionary conduct.
