They helped feed and connect their community during a series of ICE raids. Now, the founders of Black Radish Farm are looking to the future.

In early January, the day that a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Minneapolis resident Renee Good, local urban farmer Carrie Thompson “dropped everything to become an observer,” she says.
For three to eight hours a day, she and a neighbor drove through the streets in a camera-equipped Rivian, monitoring immigration enforcement while her partner, Jade Townsend, wrangled food distribution for families in hiding.
Meeting their neighbors’ needs was not new for Thompson and Townsend, co-founders of The Black Radish Farm. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the uprising following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, they had forged digital networks to help them deliver food to their community. When the ICE raids began, they reactivated those networks and once again pursued a vital community mission.
That mission grew from a simple home garden. In 2018, the couple removed the grass in their front yard and put in edible plants. It snowballed once neighbors saw the transformation and asked Thompson and Townsend to tear up their own grass for food gardens.
Each year, they brought several new properties into the fold. Today, this patchwork farm on bungalow-framed streets spans 15 homeowners’ yards and sells fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers to the community via CSA memberships. The 14-week harvest season kicks off in June.
