Transporting food to Mars is expensive and occupies valuable space. Ideally, for a one-way trip to Mars, cultivating our own fruits and vegetables would be essential. However, farming on another planet is no small task. It requires practice, and in this aspect, a new advancement has been made recently in Antarctica. Over the last few weeks, a researcher from the German Aerospace Centre successfully harvested 3.6 kilograms of lettuce, 18 cucumbers, and 70 radishes, as announced by the scientist Paul Zabel on Thursday.
Even more impressively, these crops, grown in a lab called EDEN-ISS, were cultivated without any natural sunlight or pesticides, according to the team. The vegetables were grown using a nutrient solution that was sprayed onto their roots at regular intervals, with the entire process being controlled by a computer. LED lighting was also monitored, as well as the carbon dioxide levels in the room. “After planting the seeds in mid-February, I encountered some unexpected issues, such as minor system failures and the most severe storm in over a year,” explained Paul Zabel. “Fortunately, we were able to fix these issues and overcome the challenges.”
