John Deere collaborates with Starlink to test new agriculture connectivity solutions: report

American machinery giant John Deere is currently implementing an early access program to test agricultural connectivity solutions using Starlink’s satellite internet technology. Customers in the United States and Brazil are reportedly conducting the tests. 

As per a Via Satellite report, John Deere is expected to sell an aftermarket solution that features a ruggedized Starlink terminal and cellular modem that would enable agricultural machines to connect to the company’s farm management system. Some paying customers in the U.S. and Brazil who purchased Starlink kits are currently part of the early access program, the publication noted. 

Michael Kool, John Deere senior product manager of Connectivity, noted that Starlink has exceeded expectations in Brazil so far, with some customers using the satellite internet system for activities like in-field data sharing and logistics tracking. Kool also noted that Starlink could be a valuable resource for John Deere dealers.

“If you’re in the state of Mato Grosso, which is the largest producing state in Brazil, a dealer could be seven hours away from that machine and quickly remote display into that machine. (This allows dealers to) troubleshoot the issue they’re having, to get them back up and running without a visit or any downtime. It’s impactful,” Kool said. 

John Deere is reportedly working closely with Starlink to come up with changes to the satellite internet system that would make it optimal for farming applications. The ruggedized Starlink system for farming equipment will reportedly be manufactured by SpaceX, similar to other Starlink kits. John Deere is expected to start production of the solution around November. 

“It’s been a really cool experience seeing how our two teams blend together and ultimately deliver a solution that is a first of its kind in our vertical. We’re going to make that (hardware) a lean price that really sets the market and helps us to proliferate that solution with our customers. We want them to get on the machines. We want them to adapt and fully utilize connectivity,” the John Deere senior product manager noted.
