Germany: Iraqi Asylum-Seeker in Custody Suspected of Planning Terror Attack in Augsburg

Possible targeting of Augsburg Christmas Market

German police have arrested a 37-year-old Iraqi asylum-seeker who they say has contacts with ISIS. The reporting is ambiguous, but at some point in their investigation, police suspected the man may have been planning a terror attack on the Augsburg Christmas Market. European Christmas markets are a prime target for Islamic jihadists, and attacks in the past have occurred, for example, in Berlin and Strasbourg.

The first paragraph from the below article in today’s Augsburger Allgemeine is translated by Fousesquawk. This paragraph appears to be the latest update in a chronology of events.

A 37-year-old asylum-seeker from Iraq has been arrested in Augsburg and placed in custody pending deportation. Initially, it was thought that Ali G. had been planning an attack upon the Christmas Market in Augsburg, but this suspicion has not been confirmed. Yet, through his ISIS contacts and conspicuous posts on social media, the man has been in the sights of the authorities since October. According to the security authorities, there was and there is to date, no indication of concrete attack plans or concrete danger for Christmas markets in Bavaria. Die Welt had initially reported on the case based on its own research. The suspect is presently in the deportation custody facility in Eichstaett. Criminal investigations are ongoing at the same time.
