All Eyes on Michigan
This article first appeared in New English Review.
Tomorrow’s mid-term elections in the US are arguably the most important in our history. With
both the Senate and the House of Representatives up for grabs, the elections will say much
about which direction the country wants to go, especially with so many radical Democratic
Socialists winning the Democratic primaries and threatening to take over the Democratic Party.
At this point, no race is garnering more attention than the Michigan Senatorial race where the
Democratic candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, is running neck-and-neck with Mike Rogers, the
Republican nominee. There could be no starker contrast between the two. Rogers, the Trump-
supported conservative, and El-Sayed, the radical leftist, a person considered by many to be a
radical Muslim, with at the least, moral support from the Muslim Brotherhood, his association
with the vicious anti-American, anti-Semite, Hasan Piker, and himself an anti-Semite to boot, all
opinions and concerns which I share.
Now comes Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed narrowly defeated in the Democratic primary. At the
last moment, she has come out and endorsed Rogers for Senator, saying that she cannot
support the “anger” of El-Sayed.
Naturally, Stevens has incurred the wrath of her party, including that of soon-to-be former
party leader Charles Schumer. Last night, I watched a replay of CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s
interview with Stevens. Cooper tried very hard to press her on why she came out against El-
Sayed at this late date. Had she not just promised Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) that
she would not endorse Rogers? Was the reason really because she was piqued that El-Sayed
had disinvited her to a campaign event in Detroit? Stevens, who admittedly does not come
across impressively in public, danced around the questions and never gave a clear answer, even
as Anderson continued to press her, determined to break her.
My own reaction is that while I was never impressed on the surface watching Stevens during
the campaign (admittedly from a distance on TV), whether she is acting out of spite or whether
she really feels that El-Sayed is not fit to serve, she is doing the right thing and the courageous
thing. In her interview with Cooper, my inference was that she indirectly conceded that El-
Sayed is an anti-Semite, though she did not say it explicitly, and I don’t think she wanted to say
it explicitly. (Stevens is not Jewish herself, but her partner is Jewish, and he has publicly stated
that he is voting for Rogers.)
At any rate, this latest development puts Michigan voters squarely on the spot going into
tomorrow’s election. Many Democrats had voted for Stevens in the primaries. Now she has
come out and said that she cannot support the Democratic candidate. In the face of this, are
they really going to pull the lever for Abdul El-Sayed? When it comes to American politics, I am
beyond making any predictions about anything. But shame on the state of Michigan if they
send Abdul El-Sayed to the US Senate.
