Wish Fire, a psychic medium has always gravitated to haunted locations. When Wish Fire lived in Eagle River, Wisconsin, she would at times visit the neighboring state of Minnesota. While Wish Fire visited many locations in Minnesota, there were 6 haunted locations that to this day still resonate in her mind. These are Wish Fire’s 6 Haunted Places in Minnesota.

Schmidt Brewery
Schmidt Brewery was built in 1855 on a natural cave. Minnesotans say that this brewery is one of the most haunted sites in Minnesota. Let’s delve right in and find out what makes this brewery so haunted. Wish Fire tells me that the original brewery, North Star Brewing, opened in 1855. The brewery was literally carved into the rock. There are caves at the brewery in which they can store ales. The original cave opening is still visible today, its located at the bottom of the bluffs. Visitors report feeling cold spots on hot days and weird eerie sounds coming from within the walls of the caves. In 1900, when Jacob Schmidt took over and changed the name of the brewery to Schmidt Brewing, a fire engulfed the building and ravished it to the ground. Some tourists hear the sounds of a raging fire, when there is no fire. Wish Fire believes this is strong residual energy at the brewery. Jacob who founded Schmidt Brewery was known to have a dark side. Two friends were shot at by a man in the brewery wearing a pink shirt. Jacob denied shooting the men, but when the officers came, he was wearing pink. Jacob got away with this crime, because of his status in society. The haunted Schmidt Brewery gained its reputation from the workers who died in horrendous and mysterious ways. In 1896, an explosion went off killing two people. In 1902 an employee fell to his death in an unmarked elevator shaft. The news reported that this was an accident, but many people suspect it was a homicide. Locals and tourists at times hear a man shouting and screaming, as if he was falling during the middle of the day. A couple of years later another suspicious death happened. Employee Matthew Kohler who went about lighting gas lamps in the brewery, reportedly spilled oil on himself, was set on fire and died inhaling flames and burning alive. Some paranormal groups claim that they capture many EVPs and one group claims that they captured an EVP that said “Matt” and Matt the Ghost told the investigators that he was a fireman. It appears that Matt the Ghost is the most active ghost at the brewery.

The Jonathan Paddleford Mississippi River Boat
The Jonathan Paddleford is a steamboat on the Mississippi River with a dark and scary past. Visitors claim that the boat is haunted by “The Man Overboard Ghost”. The Man Overboard Ghost is the man who climbed up to the top of the pilothouse and then fell into the river. The under currents took this man down and he died by drowning. His ghost is seen by staff and visitors. The ghost is seen climbing to the pilothouse and falling into the river. The haunting sounds of disembodied footsteps are heard. People have heard screams, and they have also heard splashing sounds, as if someone is falling into the river. This traumatic event plays back over and over again. A chilling residual haunting that will continue forever.

Nopeming Sanitorium
This sanitorium is located at 2650 Nopeming Rd, Duluth, MN 55810. Up north in Duluth you’ll find the Nopeming Sanitorium that housed over 1,000 tuberculosis patients during its tenure. The Sanitorium is legendary with Minnesotans for its haunting activities. This sanitorium is a smorgasbord of restless spirits. Let’s get some history of the Sanitorium. The Sanitorium opened in 1912, primarily to house tuberculosis patients. They had to expand and add several buildings over time as demand increased. Then in the 1970s the sanitorium was repurposed to a nursing home. It finally closed down in 2002. A few major events happened here that give rise to the paranormal activity. The most infamous is the Mother’s Day Massacre murder and suicide. The Sanitorium held a Mother’s Day event where patients celebrated with their families. But one patient had a different plan. Patient John Wintoniak shot an orderly, Alex Sufruk, five times in front of the celebration. Then the patient turned the gun around and committed suicide. There is also what is called a “suicide balcony.” Many patients jumped to their deaths from this balcony. The balcony did not have a barrier. In the basement, the “Maintenance Man” roams the halls. Visitors report hearing growls, moans, screams and at times people yelling. Manuel Guzman says when he visited the Sanitorium he heard chains hitting the walls. Manuel says he came face-to-face with “Open Mouth”. Open Mouth is a female ghost that looks like she is just skin and bones. She wears a light blue night gown. Her face is all distorted and her mouth is agape. She is missing several teeth. Manuel says that she walked right through him. When Manuel felt a burning sensation on his chest, he looked in the mirror and noticed he had several scratches on his chest. Manuel was terrified and has no plans to ever return to the Sanitorium.

Glensheen Mansion
This haunted mansion has over 39 rooms and a lot of paranormal activity. Tourists seem to gravitate to the mansion. Tourists are fascinated with the scary stories about this mansion. It is an architectural wonder that took three years to build in the early 1900s, resting on the shores of Lake Superior. The family who built it created the mining operation up there. With wealth, comes greed and sometimes tragedy. Tragedy found a home at this mansion. In 1977 a double murder happened in the Glensheen mansion’s halls. A man broke into the house, killed a nurse on the grand stairway with a candlestick. Then the man went upstairs and smothered the elderly heiress with her own pillow. The man who admitted to the murders served only 5 years in prison. When he was released, he took his own life just 12 years later. Legend has it that the ghost of the heiress hounded her killer so much, that the only way out was to commit suicide. A suspected accomplice, Marjorie Congdon, is still alive and lives in Arizona. This mansion is listed on the national register of historic places. Tourists and guides report hearing strange noises on the staircase and seeing objects moving on their own accord in the heiress bedroom.

Fort Snelling
Fort Snelling has a wild history of conflict and murder. Built in the 1800s on land known to belong to the Dakota tribe. Inside the abandoned structures is a ton of paranormal activity. Both Native American and American war spirits haunt these halls. There is a cemetery on site. People report seeing phantom men walking around the cemetery then disappearing. Wish Fire encountered many phantom soldiers while visiting the site. Footsteps are heard and some tourists say that they smell strange odors. When Wish Fire explored this fort, she heard a man yelling “Jocko!” Jocko appeared and it was a large black Mastiff. Darren Craver from Ohio says that he encountered a large black dog, and it scared him so much, he fell backwards. Darren most likely encountered Jocko.

Wabasha Street Caves
If you want to experience the spirits of gangsters, the Wabasha Street Caves is the place to be. The caves were a mushroom farm and storage facility. Then in the 1930s a night club was created. Located deep in the caves the club became a safe spot for notorious gangsters like John Dillinger. Legend has it that 3 gangsters were shot dead, but when the officers came to pick up the bodies, they mysteriously disappeared. The only evidence of this incident is that the police officers found gunshots on the cave walls. Locals hear whistling in the caves and disembodied footsteps. Some tourists feel drained, when walking in the caves. Wish Fire believes that the spirits in these caves are draining the energy from the tourists. Ghosts are known to eat one thing and that is “energy”. There is a ghost that haunts the caves and wears a nice suit. Tourists that encounter this ghost say that his whole body trembles and shakes. Some tourists call him “Shakey”. A parapsychologist believes that Shakey, a fellow gangster died because he had Parkinson’s disease. This was causing his body to “shake”.
