My nephew Michaelis Jacoby was a very well-known DJ. Michaelis has performed in clubs in Los Angeles; Moscow, Russia and Bali. Bali is known as a party town, but there are paranormal stories that originate from all over Indonesia. The people of Indonesia take the stories of ghosts very seriously. Ubud and the broader Bali area are considered haunted by many locals and tourists, deeply tied to the island’s active belief in spirits and black magic. Specific sites in or near Ubud, such as Tanah Merah Art Resort and certain villas, have reported sightings, while others like the Taman Festival amusement park and abandoned hotels are often described as occupied by ghosts. Let’s take a look at some of the haunted spots in Ubud and the Bali region.

Uma Dawa Resort & Spa (Ubud):
Recent visitors (2026) have reported spooky experiences, including mysterious 3 am knocking on doors, according to a Tripadvisor review. Tourists say they feel a spooky, “haunted” atmosphere. While not officially listed as a famous paranormal spot, recent travelers have reported the same experiences. A ghostly bare-chested teenager is seen walking around the resort spa, and he is seen sometimes walking into a wall. Strange whispering is sometimes heard. Local Hoesni Pardede claims he encountered a male ghost that was missing his eyes. The male ghost was reaching out from him. Hoesni backed up immediately and tripped and fell. When Hoesni stood up, the entity was gone. Hoesni says it was the most frightening thing he ever experienced. Another local they call “Little Ricky” also claims he say the spirit of “No Eyes” and it was a very scary moment for him.

Tanah Merah Art Resort (Ubud):
Guests have reported encounters with a “woman in white” that is seen in various rooms. Some guests say she has a strange smile on her face. The most haunted section is Rumah 5. Many tourists experienced unsettling moments in Rumah 5. Doran Lycroft from Ohio says that he saw strange black goo running down the wall. Then he heard disembodied laughter and when he looked back at the wall, the goo was gone. Another guest wrote a specific review mentioning escaping from “Rumah 5″ due to an unsettling experience. The person writing the review did not explain what the unsettling experience was. This resort is sometimes confused with the abandoned “Ghost Palace” (PI Bedugul).

Abandoned Sites:
Several abandoned spots, often called “ghost palaces,” are nearby, including the Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and Taman Festival amusement park, which are rumored to be filled with spirits. Small items are sometimes picked up and thrown by an unseen force. In Balinese culture, the belief in spirits is part of daily life. Locals and visitors often report a “heavy” or spiritual presence in older buildings, specifically in Ubud. Ubud is a deeply spiritual place where locals believe in a constant presence of spirits, both good and bad. Several specific locations in and around Ubud are famous for reported paranormal activity or an “eerie” atmosphere. A local named Idham Hutabarat claims that he was walking around the Taman Festival amusement park with his girlfriend and he heard a strange flapping sound. His girlfriend looked up and saw the cryptid known as the Ahool. Idham says the creature was huge! Idham and his girlfriend watched as the creature flew off into the horizon.

The “Ghost Palace” Hotel (P_I_ Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort):
Located about an hour north of Ubud in Bedugul, this massive-abandoned resort is Bali’s most famous haunted site. It is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of workers who died during its construction. The sound of construction is heard late at night and there is no one around. There is sometimes the sound of pounding and visitors believe the pounding sounds originate with “Tommy Knockers”.

Villa Awang Awang:
Some visitors have reported “cheeky spirits” and unexplained flickering lights, though management often attributes these to local wiring issues. In Balinese Hinduism, the world is seen as a balance between the divine and the demonic. You will often see Daily Offerings (Canang Sari): These are placed at temple entrances and on the ground to appease spirits and maintain harmony. High Compound Walls may be for privacy, but some believe these walls help protect homes from wandering spirits. Because Ubud is the “cultural heart” of Bali, the dense jungles and ancient temples—like those in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary—can feel intensely atmospheric or “heavy” to those sensitive to spiritual energy.

Cryptids in Indonesia
Indonesia is home to several famous cryptids, particularly within the dense rainforests of Sumatra and Java. I will only name a few, but let me tell you, they have many. Here are the ones I selected. The most well-known is the Orang Pendek (“short person”), a bipedal, ape-like creature documented by locals and researchers. Other notable Indonesian cryptids include the winged Ahool, the giant ape Orang Gadang, and the horned cat. A local named Yusuf Siregar claims he saw an Orang Pendek. This cryptid is 1-meter tall, herbivorous, bipedal primate covered in short fur, often reported in Sumatra. Some locals have seen the Ahool. Ahool is a giant bat-like creature with a 10-foot wingspan, large dark eyes, and a loud shrieking cry, said to live in Java. A terrifying cryptid is the Orang Gadang. Locals describe the Orang Gadang as a “Sumatran Bigfoot,” this creature is said to be between 7.5 and 12 feet tall and covered with dark hair. Horned Cat is reported on the Sunda Islands, this feline is said to be the size of a domestic cat but with small horns above its eyes. When in the jungles, watch out for the Cigua. The Cigua is a thick-set, mane-covered creature resembling a heavily built Sumatran tiger. These cryptids inhabit remote, unexplored jungles, and some sightings had multiple witnesses, which makes a multiple witness sighting credible.

UFOs/UAPs in Indonesia
There have been numerous UFO sightings in Indonesia, with reports dating back to 1942. A dedicated group, Beta-UFO, maintains a list of hundreds of sightings, spanning from 1883 to the present day. Key reports include occurrences in Sumatra (1942), Surabaya (1964), Bali (1973), and more recent sightings in Bandung and Pekanbaru, often described as strange aerial phenomena. Major documented sightings include Medan (1953, 1955), Alor and Pantar Islands (1959), and various locations in East Java. Many Indonesians often lean toward spiritual or supernatural explanations (ghosts/demons) for unexplained aerial events, says psychologist Agustinus.

Winged Entities in Indonesia
Winged entities in Indonesia range from mythical creatures and folklore spirits to unique wildlife, including the bat-like Ahool, the vampiric detached head Kuyang, and the divine, eagle-like Garuda. Other sightings include Balinese winged lions (Singa Bersayap), flying deities, and the small, gliding Draco Volans lizard. Ahool is a massive, bat-like creature with a reported 28-foot wingspan, often sighted in the jungles of Java. Kuyang (Borneo) is a dark magic user whose head detaches from its body, flying with entrails hanging below to drink blood. Garuda is powerful, divine avian creature and the national symbol, often depicted with human-like features and vast wings.
