Trump Revokes CA Drivers’ Licenses for Illegals! (Video)

For years, California politicians have given illegal immigrants drivers licenses — but now, the Trump Admin has announced a plan to end all of that! Learn the latest and how you can help ensure that only citizens are recognized with legal status, including in elections here in California.

In California, undocumented immigrants can obtain a driver’s license under Assembly Bill 60 (AB 60), which was signed into law in 2013 and took effect in January 2015. AB 60 allows all eligible California residents to apply for a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status, provided they can prove their identity and state residency.

Requirements and characteristics of the AB 60 license

To receive a license under AB 60, applicants must meet the following criteria: 

• Proof of identity: Applicants must provide documentation to prove their identity, such as a foreign birth certificate, foreign passport, or consular card.
• Proof of California residency: Applicants must provide proof that they reside in California.
• Pass knowledge and driving tests: Like all other license applicants, they must pass the written knowledge test, a vision exam, and a behind-the-wheel driving test.

No Social Security number needed: A Social Security number is not required for a noncommercial license application.

Federal limits apply: The AB 60 driver’s license looks different from a standard license and features the phrase “FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY”. This indicates it cannot be used for federal purposes, such as boarding an airplane or entering restricted federal buildings. 

Rationale and impact of the law

The law was enacted for several reasons, and its effects have been observed over time: 

Improved road safety: Proponents argued that ensuring all drivers are licensed, tested, and insured would increase road safety. A 2017 study cited by Wikipedia suggests a decrease in hit-and-run incidents since the law was implemented.
Economic benefits: An estimated 1.5 million people were expected to apply for the license in the first few years. Having a license makes it easier for undocumented residents to access jobs, run errands, and perform daily tasks.
Longer DMV wait times: The influx of new applicants did cause longer wait times at some Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices, particularly in the beginning. 
Comparison with other states

California is not the only state to extend driving privileges to undocumented immigrants. As of 2025, 19 states and the District of Columbia have similar laws. These states include Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, and New York.
