OK, gonna be a bit short…. NOT just to Vent, but yes to moan/complain/whine, but more importantly there are STILL some out there considering Windows11 — DO NOT DO IT. Go to a Pawn-Shop if need be to buy a unit with W-10 on it still IF you really, Really, REALLY, need a newer system from (also Stable) Win98, WinXP, or even Win-7, on it but that unit too old and too slow…. (I do still have a Dell with XP on it, my “Games” unit – still more than fine for the GAMES that I use it for (SimCity, SimTower, RollerCoasterTycoon, and like those) — I am NOT interested in all the bazillion online interactive multi-player games like many and need for HUGE POWER for Goggles, HeadSets, etc., add-ons that make those “immersive” fare interactions (major HD Video, massive Animated motion) what they are.)

 

SURE HOPE everyone knows #MicroSoft #MAJORSUCK #Windows11 is pathetic. If you have not Read about all the LATEST idiocy from Gates and crew causing more #BlueScreen DEATH DIVES, lock-ups, reboot loops, HDD problems, etc. CAUSED BY JUST THE LAST NOT FULLY AND PROPERLY TESTED “UPDATE” they tried Rolling out anyway until INTERNET rightly went APE-SHIT on their Asses so they “suspended” the Update Roll-Out (for now). Every Update, they claim “addresses” X issues, CREATES Z exponentially more issues! DO NOT UPGRADE TO 11 if you’re running 10. I have another slower smaller-capacity laptop w/ 10 RUNNING PERFECT! 11, I complained to MSuck about WILD SWING IN HDD SPACE USAGE (goes up/down, wildly, unexplained, by 10-30G at times). Of course, THEY DODGED and DEFLECTED.

 

I keep trying to keep WINDOWS UPDATE toggled off and in SLEEP TIL 5 weeks from now mode to AVOID them turning the roll-out back on and SCREWING MY SYSTEM already more than W11 already has (ZERO BlueScreens with W10, endless BlueScreens and other PERFORMANCE ISSUES galore with W11).

Gotta say, NO, we’re NOT talking the 1-2G (talking much larger scale here) that may fluctuate a bit regarding INTERNET BROWSERS CACHE and the like items that depending on settings may cause that ebb/flow in Space. Yes, I use, have open, FIVE BROWSERS all for varying purposes and each Browser with multiple tabs in use (that is why my Browser temp files may take far more space than yours would if you’re only using 1 or 2).

Now, as a Former IT guy, I am NOT A CLUELESS END-USER (but, yes, I mostly worked on/with MainFrames and MidRange Systems in my day, been out (Retired? No, Disability) for like 20 years now so while I was never a “PC” expert certainly dealt with them since before Windows was stolen… err… “borrowed” … no… “invented by Bill” LOL and even used to Program DOS and WIN 3.11 related Programs SHAREware, back when) and also yes NETscape got their Ruling, regarding Internet Ex-NETscape-plorer, but Jury SCREWED THEM on their Settlement, can someone reform NETscape please?) and YES know to check certain things at least. As part of the WinBoard discussion some chimed in about CLOUD SERVICE Apps. Yes, I use SEVERAL for varying reasons. YES, there is one that uses a HIDDEN .tmp.driveupload folder – which yes can cause some fluctuation (but I know it is there, and therefore know I can check it, and KNOW if there is stuff in their that would be causing an immediate fluctuation) but/and/as THAT does NOT explain the WILD SWINGS to the degree I expected them (they won’t) address. YES, at behest of another, I did try TRIPLE-CHECKING and did find something with DROPBOX (does NOT explain the 10,20,30G FLUCTUATIONS of Drive use, but) did find using the App icon, not the Browser mode as I usually do, under Account, then DISK MANAGEMENT finally noticed that some Files were being collected/stored that I DID NOT in any way want it to but it was – therefore DELETED those Files which did help A LOT with me reclaiming like 60G of space BUT AGAIN STILL DOES NOT ADDRESS THE WILD MULTIPLE 10′s GIG FLUCTUATIONS. But, now, at least, with about 100G open/free for the most part, have the flexibility that the UNIDENTIFIED and likely never anything done about it by them not a THREAT to FILL AND SEIZE my Drive as they will continue as further investigation needed – and part of this PLEA to/for others and what you may know or thoughts on?!?!? Seriously, my Primary Drive Space just seems to had evaporated and was getting RED warning indicator on/with Explorer about shrinking and nearing maxing out the HDD (Solid State drive) at like with 40G showing available of 465G. So I uninstalled some Programs I haven’t really used in a long time and maybe not again anytime soon to clean/clear some space. I even moved some DOCS (yes, they really do not take up much space, but Manuscripts and supporting Files not really needed on Primary Drive anymore), AUDIO and VIDEO files, etc., to an COffloadedSaves to both a USB S: and W: drive for safekeeping/storage, and then (of course) ran DISK CLEANUP. Finally got to about 100G free but it seems (though not doing anything that would/could/should (IMO) use up a bunch more, it seems to fluctuate up/down, back and forth, by around 30G.

WHAT IS GOING ON. Never noticed it before, until seemed I was getting nearer fill point. And, of course, yes, Online actions certainly cause 1-2-3G most fluctuation between CLEAR CACHE and like Browser items (I use 5 Browsers, according to Norton Ultimate Tools CLEAN option (yes, use that too, time to time) 2.3G that could be cleaned/cleared but of course that is just going to build back up again anyway — BUT that 30G up/down is disconcerting!!!

Well, I didn’t take a screenshot last night before going to bed but was reporting 71G free, this morning now says/shows 79G free, there are NO APPS running that would, could, just decide on its/their own to MOVE or REMOVE/DELETE that space on its own without direct interaction (Disk Cleanup, Norton Clean, whatever) but yet here it is 10 hours or so and an 6.5-7.5G ish swing.

Also, I’ll add, I do a Podcast, I use ZOOM to Record my Show, and yes obviously I watch carefully/closely when Recording new, copy/paste OUT OF ZOOM the Video file to my Podcast Folder, DELETE the entire Zoom Folder with Audio, Video, etc. to clear that Space; as bet some do not realize those things will dwell forever if we do not clean/clear them and those Audio/Video files grab/keep/eat a lot of space. And as I u/l BTS/SP Video to Video outlets OFFLOAD them to USB storage and ditto for Audio version episodes u/l to my Show Server co.

None of that helps explain WILD ON ITS OWN FLUCTUATIONS where I have done ZERO to really effect the Disk fluctuations up/down like happened overnight last night. I am HAPPY to have the extra 7Gish free but have no idea if it will continue to remain/show free and actually be available or if another WILD FLUCTUATION downward, for the whatever unknown reasons I am trying to have ascertained.

As I said I only really became aware this going on after just randomly deciding to use Explorer to look at THIS PC to check all Drives info/data and back when saw C lit up in Red at 40G and concern about where the Heck all the Space had gone?!?!? Deleted some Programs, Offloaded some stuff (like prior Manuscripts (as I am an Author too) already Published and likely not going to do uptate(s) to/with and their old other Research and other associated type (PDFs, Images, maybe small Audio/Video, whatever) files but again those mostly MS-Word Docs that do not really take all that much space, to USB Storage, etc.

Also, let me add, I certainly see the COMPRESS THIS DRIVE to save Space, but let me be Frank (or Earnest, if you prefer; as no I can never Pass on Lame Puns as I am also #JOKEsterJOE on Savaged Unfiltered) I have been PARANOID about even attempting to use it – my “TRUST” level with you right now is NOT VERY HIGH. I was happy and stable with Win10 but as a former IT guy I was hesitant to upgrade to 11 but did and having NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS with this HP Laptop (Blue Screens, where I had ZERO for Years using Win10 on/with it; this issue I see now; and of course yes I am AVOIDING LIKE THE PLAGUE any more Updates with seeing all the ISSUES with the latest Updates (esp. those with HP systems and/or WD drives (which I do not have internally (I had an upgraded SolidState Samsung put in more than a year ago on this unit for more storage and supposed better access speeds; as well as maxed the memory up to 16G cuz SADLY (again I say as a former IT guy) you nor other S/W companies ever seem to bother to really cleanup after selves and/or bother to work any potential effeciencies in as attitudes seem to be to have ZERO RESPECT for the end user as systems have more and more larger HDDs and original Sale Memory and just therefore HOG IT ALL and expect us to keep upgrading equipment as more and more Resources HOGGED by the Software) but one of my Externals is)); etc.

I looked closely at the image you provided and noticed the green icon in File Explorer, which indicates that you may be using cloud-based software for folder synchronisation. It is likely that you are cleaning up your files and then downloading them from the cloud, resulting in recurring changes in the disc usage. We recommend that you try stopping the connection with the cloud-based software or pausing the synchronisation function to see if this solves the problem.

Have you checked that you don’t have any malware on the disk? I don’t know how Norton deals with these but McAfee quarantines them and you need to sign in as the Administrator and remove them.

Thank you, will have to look into that! Though I use Cloud Sources that SAVE A COPY offline but never supposed to bring anything ON TO my System w/o me initiating request for whatever to be moved/restored/replaced upon my System, should NOT be bouncing about my Drive Space usage. But, again, Thanks, certainly have to “consider” something is going on regarding those. This indeed could have been BOUNCING ABOUT up/down for some time but I hadn’t noticed until the SPACE WENT RED to warn of such low space remaining.

I would certainly EXPECT that there would be a degree of fluctuation as they may work, but nothing like the swings in Space I am seeing.

I have multiple systems (not going to say which, as frankly NONE of them are PERFECT (one uses WhiteList other BlackList)) and the System Checks CLEAN by all various checks (but, cannot hurt for me to check with someone that I deal with whenever they are on my System to help with “whatever” they do their own separate online-initiate SCAN.

Certainly worth considering. As said elsewhere, I have multiple SYSTEM CHECKS for Malware, Viruses, etc. (in fact, I actually have a THIRD that has CHECK SERVICES that I have never toggled on, since seemed STABLE and SAFE with the other two – will have to let it loose to do a Scan to see if somehow it catches something the others missed).

Any suggestions on what is SAFE/SECURE and Checks for such?!?!?

I’m not aware of any software that checks to see if you’re part of a botnet – which doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t any. Normal anti-malware applications don’t notice it, because the botnet’s owner (or current lessor) isn’t doing anything harmful to the computer. Your computer is doing the kind of work that computer’s normally do, except that it’s doing that work for someone else.

 

You would need to have your computer analyzed by someone who specializes in looking for botnets. Here’s a rule-of-thumb test: Disconnect your computer from any and all networks (so the botnet owner can’t reach it.) If the behavior you are observing stops, you’re probably part of a botnet.

 

If so, this is something you need to address, because the botnet owner is not using your computer to do their homework. More likely, your computer is sending out spam or participating in DDOS or trying to crack passwords … like that.

Thank You for thinking on this more and calling it out, even though I thought I had RULED OUT the various different CLOUD SERVICES type Apps (I have several, all for different reasons, and different things) and found DROPBOX was the culprit.

[THANK YOU ALL that took the time and concern to chime in.... I double and triple checked a few things, and finally found the culprit.... I ultimately, after checking DROPBOX via WebBrowser, as I have been using and intended to use that way as mainly OFFLINE STORAGE of things to SHARE or for addl SAVE and temporary HOLD OFF ONLINE so that I can/could access certain bigger Files from other locales and Computers, finding nothing that grabbed my attention..... HOWEVER, what I finally was able to find, after all your Help and my trying to double and triple check things I thought I had already properly RULED OUT as the issue.... Under the DROPBOX icon right click to bring it up in APP mode, under Profile, MANAGE DISK SPACE, revealed (frankly a bunch of GARBAGE) items I had no idea it was PACK-RATTING supposedly on my behalf (that I was openly, knowingly, thought was duplicating (especially some Videos from my Phone I have no idea WHY they would have gotten onto my Phone to supposedly IMPORT from in the first place (creates a NEW ISSUE for me, how they getting on the Phone, Why, are they hiding somewhere on the Phone taking up Space there I don't want/need) to now have to try find, clear, STOP them from gathering any more.... So, I found and ARCHIVE folder full of junk I was able to CLEAR/REMOVE without affecting where I expect ONLY COPY OF SUCH TO BE as well as checked CAMERA IMPORT (where those Videos were, CLEARED/REMOVED) and toggled going forward IMPORT RULE to be IMAGES ONLY and now know, must keep in mind, they collect and need occasional review for what should be kept there and what all got there hiding I didn't know was indeed accumulating there.]

NONE OF THIS was able to SOLVE/RESOLVE the issue, just that the triple check of DropBox revealed some things (about 40G of sh….tuff that I was not aware, didn’t know, didn’t want, DB to be duplicating on my HDD that I was able to clear and by removing bumped me to over 100G. And, then over past few days another 30-35G also MAGICALLY CLEARED and I have about 145G FREE SPACE now. SO, giving up on ANY SOLUTION COMING at least with that amount of Free Space the 30G up/down WILD FLUCTUATIONS will not threaten to FILL MY DRIVE.

A response I made to someone (SMS Texts, back and forth) in regard to their saying a recent CTP Show “BrainDead (well that’s a harsh title LOL) part 1″ (https://www.buzzsprout.com/2210487/14431880-christitutionalist-politics-s1e33-brain-dead-folks-part-1-well-this-is-a-harsh-show-title-lol) was/is “thoughtful”…

Thx for the feedback on BrainDead1 episode (he will be on my Show soon for an already “Listener Feedback” mini-episode in next several weeks (end of February or early March 2024) when he wanted to react and talk about S1E13 “Censorship” Show) I indeed go for “thoughtful” (always, logic and reason and facts) though I have addressed that sometimes I may indeed get HOT/ANIMATED and sound more like raving lunatic (Leftist) at times (while “spirited” in “tone” and action – still using logic/reason/strategy but just a bit more “passionately” delivered (see related https://www.youtube.com/shorts/bc5yiLorRF0 1m YouTube Short on that))! LOL Thankfully those number of Shows are the exceptions and not the Rule. I am always going for “not the same ole talking-point takes of the usual suspect talking-head parrots” (there is Hannity and a million others for the same-ole bs parrot responses (though, not to say, sometimes a particular talking-point oft heard is not worth repeating too, but parroting cannot be one’s ONE TRICK (and sadly too many are just parrots (or One-Trick-Pony, if you prefer) with never any originality — AT ALL, EVER (at least if delivering the same basic “topics” have some reasonable different approach or other “angle” of delivery than same mono-tone talking-head resting face and voice))).
