Eoastrapostylops enters the LRT following Meniscotherium
Eoastrapostylops riolorense
(Sora and Powell 1981, Late Paleocene, 59 mya, Argentina) was originally and currently considered a basal astrapothere (Astrapotherium) an elephant ancestor from South America. Here in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa) this small taxon with a skull the size of a baseball evolved from Meniscotherium (from Utah) and gave rise to the larger Thomashuxleya and Periphragnis, (both from South America).
Click the links above to see the data.
These taxa are not close to astrapotheres in the LRT.
Uniquely lower incisors are missing. That moves the lower canines to the anterior, acting as a predentary. Even so an overbite is present. The premaxilla is largely missing taphonomically, but would have been short. A dorsal view is not yet available, but a palate view includes massive molars and wide zygomatic = jugal arches.
This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
