Current state of the mammal subset of the LRT: August 2026
The major takeaway
for the mammal subset of the LRT (Fig 1, click to view entire LRT) is the 3x times placental clades arose from the single marsupial clade, that arose about the same time as the monotreme clade.
One more taxon, Macroscelides alone, represents a fourth time placental reproduction arose in convergence from marsupial ancestors.
Wortman 1902 predicted this, decades before software was available to process the data and prior to the publication of hundreds of fossil taxa.
Creodonts and Pantodonts
are recovered basal to carnivore and herbivore placental 1 taxa respectively. Placental 2 taxa include Jurassic multis and extant rodents (including manatees). Placental 3 taxa include tree shrews, shrews, hedgehogs, cingulata and the aardvark – tenrec – pakicetid – odontocete lineage. Placental 4 taxa includes only Macroscelides, the original sengi.
This appears to be novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
If not please provide a citation so I can promote it here.
The LRT is filling the space vacated by paleontologists who cherry-picked taxon lists and/or employed deep time genomics. The LRT minimizes taxon exclusion.
