Ancient Egyptian Tomb Charts the Rise of Stacked Mummies

A study of an ancient tomb near Luxor has traced a striking change in Egyptian burial practice – bodies that were once placed in separate coffins gradually became part of a dense, vertically layered accumulation. Side Chamber 3 of Theban Tomb 209 also contains a mummified dog laid over the legs of a man and woman. The chamber preserves a sequence of changing choices made over several centuries, rather than a single snapshot of Egyptian funerary life.
A Tomb Used Across Centuries
The findings come from a new study by Jared Carballo-Pérez and Miguel Ángel Molinero Polo, published in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology. Their archaeothanatological analysis examined body positions, coffins, sediment layers, objects and the relationships between successive deposits rather than treating the chamber as a single event. This approach allows the researchers to reconstruct the order in which the chamber filled and to distinguish primary burials from later disturbance.
The researchers identified 16 human individuals in primary or partly primary positions, a mummified canid and a disturbed deposit containing at least four additional individuals. The remains span the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty through the Ptolemaic period, roughly the eighth century BC to 30 BC, documenting how burial space changed over time.
