Monumental Street Including Heracles Gate Found at Side
Archaeologists working at the site of ancient Side located in Southern Turkey, have completed the excavation of a 390-meter-long (1,280-foot) monumental street, with the star find being a Heracles Gate which has artwork displaying the Greek Hero’s 12 Labors. The Ministry of Culture & Tourism of Turkey said the stone reliefs date to the third century AD but had been repurposed as part of the later construction of the gate in Late Antiquity. The stonework find is not just the discovery of a fantastic, grand entrance, but it also provides evidence for the shift between the city of Side when it was Roman to Side being a site of Christianity by the fifth century.
Heracles Gate Emerges on a Monumental Route
The excavations were carried out along Street B from the northwest corner of the Side gymnasium to the East Gate, one of the main approaches to the old city. On the north side of the street, the archaeologists documented an east-west stoa built in the 2nd century AD. This had rooms arranged behind it and surviving jambs and thresholds marking the Roman frontage.
There were three monumental entrances along the street portico: the West Gate, the Heracles Gate and the North Bath Gate. Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, said of the find:
