Mike Vick + Aaron Rodgers = Lamar Jackson

Lamar Jackson v. Josh Allen

No one will deny that Lamar Jackson is a human highlight reel. No one would deny his greatness. But that greatness is always qualified, particularly by the national media.

“Lamar is a regular season two-time MVP who doesn’t get it done in the postseason.”

But are those postseason losses all on him? You can go back and look at each playoff loss and make the case that Lamar at worst, shares responsibility. But he’s hardly solely responsible. Yet the national talking heads keep spinning that same, tired narrative.

Clearly Lamar has developed as a passer. His prowess by air in 2024 is among the all-time greats.

Recently, Lamar eclipsed Michael Vick’s all-time rushing record for a quarterback. Jackson took 7 seasons to establish the record. Vick took 13 seasons to accumulate his rushing totals of 6,109 yards. Now imagine a running quarterback who is the NFL’s greatest ever meshed together with the passing efficiency of Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning. What might that look like?

And the answer is?

Lamar Jackson!

Earlier in his career, one could fairly criticize Lamar’s passing prowess or lack thereof. The arm strength was always there but the mechanics, ball spin and accuracy, if we’re being honest, were all substandard. But through hard work, film study and an overall dedication to his craft, Jackson has become not only an efficient passer, but one of the league’s best. It’s a scary thought for the rest of the NFL that this two-time MVP is putting in the work to continue lifting his career trajectory.

His ascent is like that of another all-time sports great who was also not afraid of some hard work – Michael Jordan.

Incidentally, Jordan didn’t win his first NBA title until his 6th season before he went on a roll.

BLANKED OUT!

Hey, remember when Arthur Blank wasn’t interested in Lamar Jackson? In so many words Blank suggested that he didn’t think investing in LJ was a good idea because his success, given his style of play, wasn’t sustainable? And then he gave 36-year-old Kirk Cousins a 4-year, $180M deal with $100M guaranteed, and then spent the draft’s 8th overall pick in 2024 on a quarterback projected to go on Day 2? Oh, and now he’s looking to dump Cousins less than a season later? Remember?

Apparently Arthur blanked out!

It must suck to be a Falcons’ fan!

LAMAR v. JOSH ALLEN MVP TALK

It would be one thing if all this talk about the NFL MVP was a recent topic. But it’s not. It dates back to week 5 when there was some talk about Lamar and Derrick Henry being co-MVPs. It’s a tired topic because of how long the conversation has been an active one, albeit irrelevant. NOW, the topic IS relevant, so I’ll add my two cents.

Here’s an interesting take on the debate which finishes with Bart Scott stating:

“Now it’s apples to apples because it looks like the Baltimore Ravens are going to win the [AFC North], so you’re going to have two division winners. So now you go back to the head-to-head and you saw both guys on the field at the same time. You tell me, that day, who do you think was the best player in football?”

And during that head-to-head game that Bart is referring to on September 29, 2024, here’s how the two MVP candidates compared:

Lamar Jackson v. <a rel=Josh Allen” width=”800″ height=”88″ />

We keep hearing that Allen has fewer tools to work with than Lamar. We are repeatedly told that the Bills defense isn’t as good as the Ravens.

Compare both rosters. There isn’t much difference.

Compare both defenses over the course of the season and you’ll see that the Bills give up 17 more yards per game than the Ravens.

The only thing preventing Lamar from his third MVP is Lamar – meaning that voters might experience a little Lamar Jackson fatigue and by default, they defer to the closest competitor. If only NFL officials had similar fatigue with the Kansas City Chiefs.

MORE BART

I remember fondly the days when I hosted Hot Sauce with Bart Scott broadcast simultaneously on ESPN 1300 and FM 105.7 during the 2007 season. The Ravens season was a shit show, but Bart made it fun. As if his humor and unique perspective on the NFL wasn’t enough, we came up with our own version of Stupid Human Tricks. Each week we rewarded the best trickster with a pair of Ravens tickets. The winner was determined by the audience ovation.

One guy ate a scorpion pepper (allegedly the second hottest pepper in the world) and chased it down with a shot of tequila that included a live goldfish. Another time we had two guys race to see who could eat a full pound of pasta first. I also recall a staff member from Della Rose’s of Canton, the host locale for the show, jump into the harbor in December.

During Halloween, I dressed up with a black ball cap and a black t-shirt, both with a white “P” on it. I also had my left eye shaded to look like a black eye. What was I? (First correct guess sent to in**@ru*****************.com will receive an RSR skull cap and t-shirt)

Anyway, Bart thought that I was punched, not remembering that it was a Halloween theme for the show that week. Bart wanted to know who did it and where he lived.

Good times on that show and it was clear that Bart had the chops for a career in broadcasting. And like his takes or not, he’s thoughtful and entertaining.

GREG GUMBEL

Today is an immeasurably sad day, not just for me of course but for the countless people who knew and worked with Greg all these years. When people die, you always hear tributes about how great they were and how much everyone liked them. But I’m telling you, in all my years in this business, I have never heard anyone say one negative thing about Greg Gumbel. As far as I could tell, his only character flaw was his disdain for Bruce Springsteen, but I loved him for that, too. It’s what made Greg, Greg. ~ Seth Davis, CBS Sports

FROM ROH to HOF

To date, the Ravens have 3 Hall of Fame players, all of whom played together during their careers, namely Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Lewis and Reed also played with Terrell Suggs and Marshal Yanda. And then when you add in potential HOF talents like Haloti Ngata and Justin Tucker, when all is said and done, that’s six possible gold jacket members on the same roster. To think that the Ravens were only able to capture one Super Bowl with that talent is a tad mind-blowing.

Be that as it may, besides Lamar Jackson & Co. threatening for another Lombardi, during Super Bowl week, we’ll find out if Suggs and Yanda will be enshrined. And while I hope they make it, the guess here is that both eventually will, but Suggs will go in first followed someday by Yanda.
