OTL: Can Ravens Keep Post-Bye Momentum Going?

Hamilton point OTL

There are no easy matchups or opponents at the NFL level, but this year’s iteration of the New York Giants are the closest thing that the Ravens were going to get to a tune-up game coming out of their BYE. It made for a nice easing-in process to starting their schedule back up, and you can tell that, despite the success in the game, the guys are locked in.

In seasons past, there have been times that Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense looked rusty coming off their BYE. I’m wondering if someone mentioned that to Lamar during the week off and he decided to make us all look stupid for commenting on it.

Is this good? I feel like this is good.

In what we’re all hoping is a preview of what’s to come in the home stretch of the season, Lamar Jackson diced up the Giants defense all day in a performance that was damn near perfect. Rashod Bateman was a major beneficiary, making a few great plays in his own right to register two touchdowns on the day, including a great couple of moves following a disgusting route on his first score.

To make matters sweeter, Mark Andrews reeled one in to become the franchise leader in TD receptions…

…and something that we’ve all been waiting for finally happened: Tez Walker reeled in his first career catch for a gorgeous toe-tap touchdown.

When Tez reeled that ball in, I think my consciousness ascended to a new plane of existence. I’m so happy for him, and seeing the upturn of the receiver room’s production was a stark departure from all of the preceding drama of the previous two weeks with Diontae Johnson. Speaking of players who saw an upswing in productivity and a bit of redemption, how about the defense’s turnaround?

To Broderick Washington’s point in that first post, the defense’s finish had left a lot to be desired in the first half of the season, but it looks like they’re starting to lock in a little more. Not only does the communication appear better, but some guys that had struggled early in the year like Roquan Smith are looking like their old selves again. Michael Pierce returned to the lineup, making an immediate impact, and in large part, it looks like the late BYE is helping the roster get healthier. They escaped the game with few notable injuries outside of Tre’Davious White, who looked like he had an arm or shoulder injury of some kind, and hopefully it’s not anything serious (we’ll get our first injury report today, with the upcoming clash against Pittsburgh being on Saturday)…

…but this is the time of year when you want to see those injury reports mercifully short. If the Ravens can play clean football for the next few weeks, we might be able to see the best version of this team down the stretch.

Color me cautiously optimistic… so long as they can get the penalties under control.
