Chicago Cubs call up 5.40 ERA pitcher to replace Porter Hodge

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) watches players warm up during spring training camp.

On Tuesday morning, Chicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer hinted that the team would make a minor transaction on Tuesday for the bullpen, as Porter Hodge is headed to the 15-day injured list with an oblique issue.

Hoyer said any significant trade for relief help wouldn’t happen until at least the middle of June.

“I think there’s no question that the bullpen is going to be aided by outside help, whether that’s big transactions or small,” Hoyer told 670 The Score. “I think there’s no question we’re going to continue to add guys… And you just got to keep churning through relievers. I think, as far as larger transactions, that doesn’t really start probably until mid to late June at the earliest.”

On Tuesday, the Cubs called up a right-handed reliever who won’t excite the fan base but can help Chicago weather their series against the Miami Marlins this week.

Per the Cubs, the team activated Ian Happ from the 10-day IL. Moises Balleteros is headed back down to Iowa. Hodge is on the 15-day IL. Ethan Roberts is getting sent up from Triple-A.

Roberts has appeared in nine games for the Cubs this season. He’s earned an ERA of 5.40 through 8.1 innings pitched. He’s recorded six strikeouts.

Roberts has appeared in nine games for Iowa, posting an ERA of 1.69 in 10.2 innings pitched. He has 18 strikeouts.

Chicago dropped the first game of their series 8-7 against the Marlins on Monday via a walk-off hit. The Cubs play Game 2 on Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. CST.
