Meet The New Boss, Same as The Old Boss!
Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season is now in the books. The mirage of Week 1 is over. Week 2 brings some teams that were propped up on pedestals via the extreme recency bias of the national media (yes Ryan Clark, I’m looking at you) have come back down to earth. The precipitous drop for some is akin to a free fall from a skydiver’s prop plane.
It’s an annual occurrence.
Close to home in the AFC North, the Bengals advanced to (2-0), beating the hapless Jaguars, their overrated quarterback and batshit crazy head coach. However, the win was costly as Cincinnati lost their star QB Joe Burrow to a turf toe injury that requires surgery and will sideline him for at least three months. The league needs its star players and Burrow is clearly one. Hopefully, the surgery is a success. Ravens’ fans will recall the turf toe injury that eventually shortened Jonathan Ogden’s Hall of Fame career.
The Steelers lost their home opener at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks (thank you Mike Macdonald) to fall to (1-1). Aaron Rodgers who peppered the familiar Jets defense with 4 TD passes in the opener, was also a victim of gravity. He was dealt a slice or two of humble pie during an outing in which he went 18 of 33 for 203 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs and a passer rating of 58.0. D.K. Metcalf had 3 catches for 20 yards to push his season totals to 7 catches for 103 yards. Not quite the returns you would expect on a 5-year contract valued at $150M with $60M guaranteed.
And this brings us to the hometown team – one that dusted off to overcome the utter despair of their 41-40 loss to the Bills in the season opener. It wasn’t always pretty. It wasn’t always how they practiced it. But it was a step in the right direction against a team that fields a formidable defense.
All. Phases.

[Ravens v. Browns Report Card]
THE GOOD
Offense
Lamar Jackson is so good that even when he has an off day, he’s better than 90% of the league’s quarterbacks. Lamar was under constant duress the entire afternoon. If Joe Flacco stood behind the Ravens o-line, he’d still be checked in at Hopkins, resting in ICU. On Sunday Lamar, you know, the running back, surpassed Aaron Rodgers as the NFL’s all-time leader in passer rating with a 102.65 rating v. Rodgers’ 102.6. Oh, and the “RB” is also the all-time QB leader in rushing yards. Not a dual threat RB, right?
All four of Lamar Jackson’s touchdown passes targeted a receiver over 10 yards downfield against the Browns.
Since the start of 2024, Lamar Jackson has thrown 32 TD passes over 10 air yards, 10 more than the next closest QB (Joe Burrow, 22).#CLEvsBAL | #RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/pPGoHJ3s2k

Zay Flowers looks to be fully recovered from last season’s knee injury. Against the Browns he collected 7 balls for 75 yards putting his season total at 14 and 218, on pace for over 1,800 yards. To the Ravens credit they are spreading the ball around and that will become increasingly important as opposing defenses roll coverage towards Zay. DeAndre Hopkins had 2 catches for 41 yards and a score; the always reliable Tylan Wallace collected a TD pass while second-year WR Devontez Walker scored twice, once on a 4th-and-goal conversion at the 2-yard line, and another from 24 yards out.
Defense
Nate Wiggins raised some concerns during training camp. He was beaten regularly by the Ravens receivers. But when it has counted, Nate has stepped up. He had a big interception and flipped the field with his 61-yard return. He also added another 2 passes defensed to his afternoon. He also a TFL, leaving his man and delivering a takedown in the defense’s left flat.

The Ravens secondary was tight. They forced Flacco to check down often and they also created some indecisiveness for the former Raven with varied looks…Kyle Hamilton was solid as always, contribution 5 tackles, 1 for a loss…Tavius Robinson had a strip sack and was on point as an edge setter in the run defense…Chidobe Awuzie has had a quietly productive two games and at this point should start over Jaire Alexander. Marlon Humphrey’s groin injury could open a short-term opportunity for Alexander. I think his was a healthy scratch and NOT injury related. I believe it was merit based and a motivational tactic by Harbaugh. Jaire needs a big season. He’s playing for his next contract. The clock is ticking and others at this point, are more deserving of the reps.
Special Teams
The kick and punt coverage teams had productive afternoons. The Browns averaged just 18.8 yards on 5 kick returns while Cleveland punt returners had only 1 opportunity to return a punt but opted for a fair catch instead. Stout, who I maintain never seems to hit a bomb when the Ravens need one most, netted 51.8 yards on 5 punts. That’s quite good…And let’s not forget the blocked punt by Jake Hummel, something that has been missing from the Ravens special team arsenal seemingly since the days of Ed Reed…A very nice afternoon for Chris Horton’s unit.
THE BAD
Offense
The Ravens offensive line was beaten badly by the Browns defensive front. Baltimore’s ground game never got untracked. They were held to 45 rushing yards which is the fewest during Lamar’s tenure with the team. King Henry suffered a coup d’état, posting just 23 yards on 11 carries…Justice Hill is struggling to get going in 2025 after a terrific 2024 campaign. He’s touched the ball 9 times this season, producing just 14 yards. He’s run it 5 times for MINUS 7 yards. That burst which was on display last season has been MIA so far in 2025…Same can be said for Mark Andrews who through 2 games has a total of 2 catches for 7 yards. Although it looked like a TD catch to me (proving that I don’t know what a catch is anymore), Mark must put that ball away. Good play by the defender but Andrews is a decorated player and a highly paid one who needs to make opportunities like that below count, and not leave it up to a coach’s challenge… The offense was just 3 of 12 on third down.
Is Mark Andrews washed?

Defense
The Browns offense dropped back to throw 50 times during the game (45 by Joe Flacco) and walked away with just 2 sacks. In Game 1 against the Bills, Josh Allen dropped by 46 times and was sacked once. Three sacks, two games, 96 pass plays AND the Ravens had large leads in both games forcing their opponents to be one-dimensional. Making matters even more challenging, 2024’s best edge rusher, Kyle Van Noy, is likely to miss a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. Oh, and Jadeveon Clowney, thought to be an ace in the hole if the current cast of edge rushers failed, has been signed by the Cowboys.
Special Teams
Sometimes I wonder what Tyler Loop has been practicing all summer long when it comes to kickoffs. In consecutive games he has failed to drive his kickoffs into the landing zone, giving teams a start at the 40-yard line. That’s 20 yards from a FGA. Do better.
THE UGLY
I’ve set aside the ugly in this game for all the Browns whining from fans and members of the Cleveland media, still bellyaching about the original Browns move to Baltimore, along with players from this awful franchise trash-talking like they are the league’s new dynasty. Here’s a sampling:
Just a lil reminder of what happened the last time the #Browns weren’t tanking and went into Baltimore. The defense we are fielding is even better this time around and there’s so much more to play for on Sunday. The Ravens ain’t ready for what’s coming

Browns-Ravens should be one of the nastiest rivalries in sports. If the Ravens flaunting 1996 in Cleveland’s face is what it takes for it to finally feel that way, so be it.
— Ben Axelrod (@BenAxelrod) September 12, 2025
#Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone says if he were a player, the #Ravens celebrating 30 years of the Browns moving there with them in town on Sunday would give him even more juice.
— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) September 11, 2025
Talk about the birds? #Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy just pulled off a double move before the game, giving the #Ravens double middle fingers in pre-game intros. Pretty sure that’s for their 30-year celebration of the #Browns moving here. He got boo’ed.

How did that work out for you guys?
The corner is blitzing and safety rotates over but is 6+ yards off. Jeudy is what we call “hot” he needs the ball on a now screen or as soon as possible. Jerry Jeudy can’t have this as the Browns WR1 I refuse to accept this type of play from him. Catch the ball. pic.twitter.com/GXCO8uiZBS

COACHING
Props to Todd Monken for finding ways to score despite his o-line getting skull-dragged. Moving the pocket with designed rollouts and waggles, usually away from Myles Garrett, helped spread the field and mitigate the some of the pressure from the Cleveland front 7.
Zach Orr gets a few flowers for showing Joe Flacco a number of different looks in coverage and simulated pressures. He wasn’t shy on 3rd down and trusted his backfield to stay true to their assignments during their attempts to rattle Joe Cool. It worked well.
As for John Harbaugh, no deer in headlights this week. He kept the pedal to the metal and hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.
THE PAIGE SPIRANAC AWARD
Per the Ravens PR group, Roquan Smith on Sunday, became the first NFL player since at least 2008 to record at least 15 tackles, 3 TFL and 1 defensive TD in a game. Roquan played downhill all afternoon, thumping the Browns in the run game. Smith had a total of 15 tackles, gave Flacco a couple of not-so-friendly hits and he had three tackles for loss before intermission. Comparatively speaking, Agent Zero had just 4 TFL in all of 2024. And to put the exclamation point on arguably his best game as a Raven, Roquan made a house call.
Roquan Smith hit 19.06 mph on his 63-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, per @NextGenStats. It was the fastest he’s run over the past three seasons.
