Fun, Failure, Frustration, & Fame: Week 6 Edition
This is my reminder that fantasy football should be fun. It is also fair warning that I only play (and write about) fantasy football for fun. I have never done a paid league, and I would not suggest you use my thoughts in a betting situation. I am NOT an expert, and I play for fun.
FAILURE
Part One: My Failures
WR Ja’Marr Chase
Ja’Marr Chase proved me wrong by finally having a breakout game, albeit in a blowout loss for the Bengals. Chase had 6 catches for 110 yards and 2 TDs. Now, it looks like Chase will have QB Joe Flacco throwing to him. Flacco loves the deep ball so there is a chance in any given week for Chase to put up huge numbers. I expect Chase to be a boom or bust player from here on out—he’ll have games where he puts up huge numbers and potentially leads your fantasy team to victory, but he’ll also have games with poor numbers when Flacco doesn’t have time to get the ball to him.
RB Derrick Henry
I thought the Ravens would find a way to get Derrick Henry going, but nothing the Ravens did Sunday worked offensively or defensively. Henry had 15 carries for 33 yards. He did salvage some fantasy points with 1 TD. It’s possible the Ravens finally change things up with the offensive line and Henry improves, especially when Lamar Jackson is able to return. But at this point, until proven otherwise, Derrick Henry can not be trusted as a reliable fantasy option. If he’s on your team, I’d start fielding offers and hope someone has more confidence in him to put up big numbers
WR Darius Slayton
Last week I liked Darius Slayton as a waiver wire add because of the injury to Malik Nabers. Unfortunately, not only did Slayton not put up numbers – he had 3 catches for 31 yards – he left the game and is expected to miss time with a hamstring injury.
Part Two: This Week’s Player “Failures”
RB Derrick Henry
See stats above. Henry can not be trusted as a fantasy producer in this offense unless something drastically changes.
Verdict: TREND
QB Geno Smith
Geno Smith had another bad game. This time he was 25 of 36 for 228 yards and 2 interceptions. The Raiders offense is not good and Geno Smith is an average QB. Yes, he will have some good games, but he will have many poor games, and should only be played if you are desperate for a QB.
Verdict: TREND
WR Elic Ayomanor
Elic Ayomanor had only 2 receptions on 4 targets for 18 yards. This is the second straight week he has finished with only 2 receptions. While it seemed QB Cam Ward was targeting him earlier in the season, it appears some of those targets are shifting to WR Calvin Ridley. Combine that with a poor offense, so I don’t think Ayomanor can be relied on for fantasy. He should only be played in a desperation spot start.
Verdict: TREND
RB Woody Marks
Woody Marks had only 7 rushes for 24 yards after looking like he was primed to take over the backfield. However, I think this was because of game script. The Texans blew out the Ravens from the start, so they relied on the veteran RB Nick Chubb. I don’t expect the Texans to blow many teams out, so I expect Marks to be more involved, in both the rushing and passing games.
Verdict: FLUKE
RB James Cook
The Patriots held James Cook to 49 yards on 15 carries. Obviously, a frustrating night for Cook and the Bills, but expect Cook and the Bills to rebound from a bad night.
Verdict: FLUKE
FRUSTRATION
The Baltimore Ravens
Let’s hope Sunday was rock-bottom and leads to some positive changes. Obviously, the Ravens have had a lot of injuries, but there is no excuse for them playing this bad!
Another Chargers RB injury
Just as rookie RB Omarion Hampton was putting up big numbers after taking over the Chargers backfield after the season-ending injury to Najee Harris, Hampton is headed to injured reserve with an ankle injury, meaning he will miss at least 4 games.
FAME
Part One: What I Got Right Last Week
Much like the Ravens, not much I did was right. The one player I was right on:
TE Darren Waller
I suggested TE Darren Waller as a waiver wire add. He delivered with 5 catches for 78 yards and 1 TD. I like Waller for 2 reasons: 1) He is a big red zone target, and 2) The Dolphins are devoid of play-makers after the Tyreek Hill injury. I expect Waller to have sufficient volume to be a solid TE play.
Part Two: Who I like on the Waiver Wire
RB Hassan Haskins
With the injury to Omarion Hampton, it is likely to be Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal to get the carries for the Los Angeles Chargers. I like Haskins to have a bigger role, but that is just my guess.
TE Taysom Hill
Taysom Hill is a complete wild-card longshot. But, the Saints offense is bad. They could use any jolt they can get. Hill is likely to be slowly worked in after returning from injury, so I don’t expect this move to pay off until later in the season. But, there’s a possibility by the end of the season, he is getting enough snaps, particularly at the goal line, to be a sneaky TE option.
K Michael Badgley
Michael Badgley was signed by the Colts to take over for the injured Spencer Shrader, who is headed to IR. The Colts have been putting up points, so there’s a good chance Badgley gets plenty of opportunities to score, even if he is less accurate than Shrader.
