Fun, Failure, Frustration, & Fame: Week 7

FUN

This is my reminder that fantasy football should be fun.  It is also fair warning that I only play (and write about) fantasy football for fun.  I have never done a paid league, and I would not suggest you use my thoughts in a betting situation.  I am NOT an expert, and I play for fun.

FAILURE Part One: My Failures

RB Derrick Henry

I predicted a downward trend for Derrick Henry after the lackluster effort against the Houston Texans.  Henry rebounded with 24 rushes for 122 yards and 1 reception for 8 yards. Henry and the rest of the Baltimore Ravens offense is hard to predict.  Hopefully, Lamar Jackson is back after the Week 7 bye, but it is hard to predict how active Henry will be when he is back.  There have been multiple games this year where the Ravens have not used him very much.

RB James Cook

I predicted that James Cook would rebound.  While his numbers weren’t bad – 17 rushes for 87 yards – it was disappointing fantasy effort for two reasons:  One, he didn’t score a TD, and two, he had 0 targets in the passing game.

RB Hassan Haskins

I suggested Hassan Haskins as a waiver addition because I thought he would be the lead back after the Omarion Hampton injury.  I was completely wrong!  Haskins had only 6 rushes for 14 yards and 1 reception for 9 yards.  Meanwhile, Kimani Vidal had 18 rushes for 124 yards and 3 receptions for 14 yards and 1 TD.  I clearly chose the wrong Chargers RB.

Part Two:  This Week’s Player “Failures”

RB Hassan Haskins

See stats above.  He is clearly behind Kimani Vidal and should be dropped immediately unless the Chargers RB injury luck continues.

Verdict:  TREND

WR Stefon Diggs

After 2 very good performances in Week 5 and 6, Stefon Diggs had only 3 receptions for 28 yards.  I still don’t trust this Patriots’ offense to be consistent, but I think Diggs will put up solid numbers most weeks.

Verdict:  FLUKE

RB Quinshon Judkins

Quinshon Judkins managed only 36 yards on 12 rushes, and had 0 receptions.  The Browns are not offensive juggernauts by any stretch and teams will make QB Dillon Gabriel (or whoever they put at QB) beat them, but I think Judkins will remain involved enough to be a solid weekly fantasy contributor.

Verdict:  FLUKE

RB J.K. Dobbins

J.K. Dobbins was stymied by the Jets defense and managed only 40 yards on 14 carries, and had 0 receptions.  This is by far Dobbins’ lowest output on the season.  I think he rebounds with a big performance against the Giants in Week 7.

Verdict:  FLUKE

FRUSTRATION

The Week of the WR injuries!

Jets WR Garrett Wilson reportedly hyperextended his knee and is expected to miss “a couple weeks” per Adam Schefter.  Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka went down with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss time.  Rams WR Puka Nacua suffered an ankle injury.  Initial reports are that it shouldn’t be a “long-term” injury but he may still miss time.  Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison left the game after being placed in concussion protocol.

FAME Part One:  What I Got Right Last Week

QB Geno Smith

I admit it feels kind of wrong to put QB Geno Smith here since he actually had a solid game and the Raiders won.  However, this is a fantasy football column and these numbers are not what you need for a starting QB to win in fantasy.  Smith finished 17 of 23 for 174 yards and 1 TD.

WR Elic Ayomanor

Elic Ayomanor had only 3 receptions for 27 yards.  He seems to be losing targets, and this Tennessee Titans offense is bad.  He is a pure desperation play from this point forward in this lackluster offense.

Part Two: Who I Like on the Waiver Wire

WR Sterling Shepard

Emeka Egbuka added to the growing list of Buccaneers WR injuries.  Egbuka hurt his hamstring and is expected to miss time.  Chris Godwin is expected to miss at least another week and Mike Evans is still trying to return from injury.  QB Baker Mayfield will sling it around to any WR out there, so Shepard is definitely worth an add.

RB Tyjae Spears

Tyjae Spears had 5 rushes for 31 yards and 4 receptions for 19 yards in his second game back.  Week 6 he had only 4 rushes for 14 yards.  While it’s hard to trust anyone on this Titans offense, Spears is worth an add because solid RBs are always hard to find, and it’s possible he could continue to increase his workload and possibly even supplant Tony Pollard for the lead back role.
