Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams had Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase fuming postgame

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase (1) acknowledges the crowd after scoring a touchdown against the Chicago Bears

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco had every right to be the hero of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. However, Caleb Williams stole the show with the Bears’ final possession.

Despite playing with a sprained AC joint, Flacco threw for 470 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions (the final interception came via a lame duck Hail Mary pass because of the shoulder injury). He helped Cincinnati take a 42-41 lead in the final minute and led two touchdown drives with only 2:15 remaining in the game.

But Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden couldn’t get his defense to make a stop for most of the game, and certainly not when it mattered.

Williams scrambled for a first down on 3rd-and-10 before the Bears took a timeout with 25 seconds remaining. On the next play, he hit Colston Loveland for 58 yards and the rookie tight end’s second touchdown of the day.

47-42 Bears via a last-minute comeback led by the man who the national media seemed to be out on after a brutal 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9.

Following the game, Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was fuming at Williams’ late heroics.

“One (expletive) stop,” Chase said, via video posted to X by Yanni Tragellis of Local 12.

Chase finished the game with 111 yards on six catches, but did not receive one of Flacco’s four touchdown passes.

During his postgame news conference, Williams explained how the play unfolded, saying he was an “emotional roller coaster” before throwing the pass.

I was a little bit of an emotional roller coaster, just because it was around 30 (or) so seconds,” Williams said. “You throw that pass and you want to get in field goal range and get down clock it, and then kick the game-winning field goal… Threw a solid ball to (Loveland), and he made a great play for us, bouncing off a few tackles and taking it the distance.

“And so in that moment, it’s like, Steph Curry with Steve Kerr, where it’s like, ‘Oh no, no, no, no, yes, yes, yes.’ So that’s that, that’s where I was in that moment. And like I said, Colston made a great play for us… That’s why he’s here.”

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams wanted that coverage

Williams said the Bears were waiting all game for the Bengals to call the coverage they did on Loveland’s final touchdown, and credited head coach Ben Johnson for pointing it out.

“We were hunting it the whole game,” Williams said. “And in that moment before, actually, that moment on the sideline, when him and I were on the sideline speaking, he was like, ‘I think we’re gonna get this coverage here in this moment.’ And it’s awesome when you got a coach like that.”

Williams finished the game 20-of-34 for 280 yards and three touchdowns. He added another 53 yards on five rushes.
