Chicago Bears made lame decision at trade deadline
The Chicago Bears were 5-3 before the trade deadline at 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
The Bears rank No. 8 in the NFC and have the same record as the No. 7 seed Detroit Lions. However, the Lions own the tiebreaker because of Detroit’s win in Week 2.

Chicago desperately needed help at pass rusher after losing Dayo Odeyinbo for the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Sunday’s 47-42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. In addition to Odeyingbo’s absence, fourth-year defensive end Dominique Robinson is expected to miss multiple weeks with a high-ankle sprain.
The Bears traded for a pass rusher on Tuesday, sending a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for defensive end Joe Tyron-Shoyikna. The 2021 first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has just nine tackles this season and no sacks.

Tyron-Shoyinka is a helpful depth piece for Chicago, but he’s nowhere near the type of pass rusher the Bears should have been looking at since the preseason. The Bears need another pass rusher to help take the heat off Montez Sweat.
After losing rookie Shemar Turner for the season, the Bears could have been in the market for a defensive tackle. Instead, Chicago watched as the 3-5-1 Dallas Cowboys had the steal of the trade deadline by adding New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
There were rumors online that the Bears had their eyes on Maxx Crosby and Jermaine Johnson. The Jets wanted a second-round pick for Johnson amid their fire sale. (The Bears could have been in New York running back Breece Hall, whom the Jets wanted a third-round pick for.)
Chicago general manager Ryan Poles chose not to pull the trigger.
When will the Bears ever generate a pass rush?

Maybe Poles’ decision is better for the Bears long term by saving a Day 2 pick. But given Poles’ track record of drafting pass rushers, this seems unlikely.
The Bears need a way to attack the opposing quarterback in the worst way, and they didn’t do enough before Tuesday to make the defense a playoff contender, especially given the team’s injuries in the secondary.
The Bears have recorded 17 sacks through their first eight games. Expect Chicago to continue averaging appropriately two sacks a game after the trade deadline.
Poles evidently saw no alarm in seeing Joe Flacco have a career day against his defense on Sunday.
