Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz hints at a potentially disappointing offseason

The Chicago White Sox will be interesting to watch navigate this offseason, as they have the money to sign a top-tier free agent and the talent in their organization to make a big trade.

More News: Chicago White Sox make their decision on Luis Robert Jr.

However, that likely won’t be the modus operandi of general manager Chris Getz, who hinted that this offseason will be like last, with a string of one-year deal signings and not much in the way of making trades.

With free agency rapidly approaching, the White Sox should be one of the teams swimming in the waters of veteran bats and arms, with holes in the starting rotation, bullpen, and first base. When asked about what the White Sox’s mindset will be heading into free agency, Getz gave a disappointing response, telling Scott Merkin of MLB.com that it would be “premature” to bring in players beyond this year.

“Free agency is an avenue to bring in players to help in the win total,” telling Scott Merkin. “But to go beyond this upcoming season I think would be a little premature considering the state of our club right now and the development of these young players.”

Chris Getz and the White Sox need to do better than repeating last offseason

This statement is a real punch in the gut if you’re a White Sox fan and got excited about the potential of their young core and had the hope that new owner Justin Ishbia would actually be “infusing funds.” The White Sox did increase their payroll when they picked up Luis Robert Jr.’s $20 million option, but if that’s the only major move to raise payroll then there’s a problem.

Having as many holes as they do at key positions like first base, the White Sox should be looking to sign someone like first base Rhys Hoskins, who is coming off a down year with the Milwaukee Brewers, after hitting .237 with an OPS of .748 and 12 home runs in 90 games. Hoskins also spent time on the injured list with a sprained thumb, which cost him a good chunk of the season.

Costing about $7 million for a one-year contract, this is a move that Getz and the White Sox can easily make to bring in someone with playoff experience and a bona fide leader who would do wonders for their clubhouse.
