Connor Bedard wears the ‘A’ on Chicago Blaackhawks sweater for first time

With two members of the Chicago Blackhawks’ leadership group out of the lineup, Connor Bedard stepped onto the ice wearing the “A” on his jersey for the first time in his NHL career. And if there was ever a moment to show he belonged in a leadership role, Tuesday night was it. Bedard delivered an unforgettable performance, scoring his second hat trick in just ten games to lift the Blackhawks to a 5–2 victory over the Calgary Flames at the United Center.

From his hustle to his scoring touch to his calm presence in crucial moments, Bedard didn’t just lead, he inspired. The 20-year-old superstar now has 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points in 19 games, putting him in elite company near the top of the NHL scoring race. Nights like this are reminders that not only is he the centerpiece of Chicago’s future, but he’s already the heartbeat of the present.

Connor Bedard’s leadership, speed, and scoring spark Blackhawks’ strong start

Wearing the “A” might have been new, but Bedard carried himself as though he’d been a leader for years. Even before the goals came, he set the tone with his pace and level of competition.

“I’ve been so fortunate to learn from guys like Foligno, Dickinson, Murphy… it’s a great honor,” Bedard said of being named an alternate captain. “The Blackhawks jersey is special.”

And he played like it.

After a slow first period where Ryan Donato opened the scoring, Bedard exploded in the second. On a loose puck near center ice, he turned on the jets, showing off the speed he added in the offseason, and beat Flames defenseman Yan Kuznetsov in a footrace before poking the puck through Dustin Wolf’s pads for his 11th goal of the season.

Later, with the score tied 2–2 early in the third, Bedard responded instantly. After a slick pass from Ryan Greene, Bedard stepped into the puck and ripped it into the top corner to make it 3–2. The puck almost seemed to leap off his stick, a perfect example of the shooting talent that has turned him into one of the most dangerous young players in hockey.

His teammates certainly noticed.

“What he’s doing right now is huge for our team,” rookie Oliver Moore said. “The way he’s playing both sides of the puck… it’s leadership.”

The chemistry between Bedard, Greene, and Moore was on full display. Moore later added the 4–2 insurance marker before Bedard completed his hat trick with an empty-net strike from his own zone.

This was Bedard’s second hat trick of the month, and he now trails only Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid in points. Calgary, meanwhile, has seen him put up seven points in their past two meetings alone.

Blackhawks keep rolling as Connor Bedard ignites the offense

While Bedard powered the offense, Chicago continued to prove it’s one of the hottest teams in the NHL. The Blackhawks are now 5-0-1 in their last six and 10-3-3 in their previous sixteen, their best stretch since 2019.

It wasn’t always perfect. After dominating the first two periods, the Hawks briefly slipped in the third. Calgary tied the game early after a turnover by Wyatt Kaiser, but Chicago responded instantly, something that has become a trend this season.

The Flames tried to turn the physicality up, dishing out big hits, including Adam Klapka’s dangerous check on Connor Murphy. But instead of losing focus, the Hawks built momentum. Moore scored on a driving play to the net, Greene collected another assist, and the team tightened up defensively.

When Calgary pulled their goalie, the crowd rose to its feet, sensing Bedard’s chance at the hat trick. He didn’t disappoint. After regaining the puck in the defensive zone, he fired it the length of the ice into the empty net, sending hats raining down in celebration.

The Blackhawks also improved to 6-0-0 when leading after two periods, another sign of their growing maturity.

Ryan Donato summed up the mood perfectly:
“It’s a completely different atmosphere in the locker room… it’s fun to be around right now.”

And with Connor Bedard leading in both scoring and spirit, it’s easy to see why. This wasn’t just another win, it was a statement. The Blackhawks are rising, their young core is flourishing, and Bedard is proving why he is already one of hockey’s brightest stars.
